Apple will soon let you control its devices with your eyes and gestures

Apple has introduced a bunch of accessibility features to help differently-abled people operate an iPhone, an iPad, or an Apple Watch. Plus, it’s launching a customer care service in the US, the UK, and France called SignTime to get assistance with Apple Products in sign language.  The company has developed a new algorithm for WatchOS to let you operate the Apple Watch with gestures such as pinch and fist clench.... Google Photos is getting password-protected photos (and a lot more)

At Google I/O this week, the company revealed a bunch of new features that are about to come to Google Photos. Google noted that despite Photos’ popularity, most of the 4 trillion pictures stored to it have never even been viewed. The new features try to make the most of the photos that you wouldn’t normally look back, including the addition of a private image folder and newfangled ways of... Read more

Can Google really build a practical quantum computer by 2029?

Google pulled off I/O, its developers conference, without a hitch yesterday. The Mountain View company retook the stage in grandiose fashion with a bevvy of announcements ranging from the much-ballyhooed new LaMDA AI system that has eerily human-like conversations to the new Wear OS update that has my editor in chief hyped about smart watches again. But, by far, the most interesting news we heard at I/O has to be... Read more

The Church of AI is dead… so what’s next for robots and religion?

The Way of the Future, a church founded by a former Google and Uber engineer, is now a thing of the past. It’s been a few months since the world’s first AI-focused church shuttered its digital doors, and it doesn’t look like its founder has any interest in a revival. But it’s a pretty safe bet we’ll be seeing more robo-centric religious groups in the future. Perhaps, however, they won’t... Read more

It’s baffling that turning tech off-and-on again works — but I’m glad it does

This is adapted from Plugged In, TNW’s bi-weekly newsletter on gear and gadgets. Subscribe to it here. Watch out! Plugged In has just tumbled through the ceiling and is now laying on the floor and rolling around and groaning in agony. But you know what? That hurts less than what happened this week. It’s story time — and that means one thing: slipping this stifling robe from my shoulders and... Read more

This company thinks wood pulp could be the future of EV batteries

Japanese Nippon Paper Industries Co. is examining how to replace EV lithium-ion batteries by using… trees, reports Bloomberg. The company wants to create supercapacitors that will use cellulose nanofibers, which are produced from wood-derived pulp, and refined to the size of hundredths of a micron or smaller.  As per Nippon Paper, such supercapacitors could potentially store and release energy with better performance and smaller environmental impact, compared to existing batteries.... Last night at Google IO, the company’s virtual developer conference, it announced a range of privacy-related features for Android 12. Here are the top five of the lot:... Read more

Here’s how much your stolen personal data is worth on the dark web

Data breaches have become common, and billions of records are stolen worldwide every year. Most of the media coverage of data breaches tends to focus on how the breach happened, how many records were stolen and the financial and legal impact of the incident for organizations and individuals affected by the breach. But what happens to the data that is stolen during these incidents? As a cybersecurity researcher, I track... Read more

California’s DMV taking Tesla to task over misleading ‘self-driving’ claims

Tesla is under review by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to establish whether the company is using misleading advertising regarding its Full Self-Driving package, the agency told the Los Angeles Times. State regulation prohibits advertising vehicles for sale or lease as autonomous, if they can’t comply with the regulatory definition, the DMV said.  Tesla explains on its website that both the basic Autopilot and the Full Self-Driving package... Google’s Wear OS update for offline audio has me re-hyped about smartwatches

I’ve been turned off smartwatches for a while now. Whether it was their poor battery life and uninteresting design, I’ve found I much prefer the simplicity and elegance of my analogue timepieces. Since the pandemic though, things have changed. In order to get out the house and avoid screens, I now walk about 10km a day, time I use to catch up on audiobooks and podcasts. Thing is, I’d like... Google and Samsung team up to make Android smartwatches better

Let’s face it: Smartwatches for Android haven’t been really great. I used to be all in on smartwatches, but after constant disappointment as an Android user, I gave up on the idea altogether. Wear OS devices are usually too bulky, slow, and/or have sucky battery life. And while Samsung largely addressed the battery life problem by going with its own Tizen OS devices, app support for Galaxy Watches has been... Read more

Google’s Project Starline brings us one step closer to holographic video calls

One of the coolest announcements at Google I/O this year was also one we did not expect: Google is working on holographic video calls — or something a lot like that — through a system called Project Starline. Project Starline aims to make video calls more natural by using a large display that shows life-size, 3D images of participants. It’s not just 3D like a 3D movie, but rather it... Read more

Google’s new AI can have eerily human-like conversations

Google has unveiled a creepily human-like language model called LaMDA that CEO Sundar Pichai says “can converse on any topic.” During a demo at Google I/O 2021 on Wednesday, Pichai showcased how LaMDA can enable new ways of conversing with data, like chatting to Pluto about life in outer space or asking a paper airplane about its worst travel experiences. Credit: GooglePluto likes to brag. Pichai said LaMDA generates a... Read more
