Understanding Transformers, the machine learning model behind GPT-3

You know that expression When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail? Well, in machine learning, it seems like we really have discovered a magical hammer for which everything is, in fact, a nail, and they’re called Transformers. Transformers are models that can be designed to translate text, write poems and op eds, and even generate computer code. In fact, lots of the amazing research I write about... Read more â€ș

What would happen if we connected the human brain to a quantum computer?

Brain-computer interfaces are slowly beginning to take form, and here at Neural we couldn’t be more excited! Elon Musk’s Neuralink claims it’s on the cusp of a working device and Facebook’s been developing non-invasive BCI tech for years. If everything goes according to plan, we could be wearing doo-dads or getting chip implants that allow us to control machines with our minds in a decade or less. That’s a pretty... Read more â€ș

Uber and Lyft will support California’s EV mandate — but only if they get more money

On Thursday, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) unanimously voted for a regulation that requires the electrification of the state’s ridesharing fleets starting in 2023, Reuters reports. According to CARB’s announcement, the regulation dictates that by 2030 rideshare companies should achieve a level of zero greenhouse gas emissions and ensure that 90% of their vehicle miles are fully electric. This brings into question Uber and Lyft both of which announced... Read more â€ș

EVs can tow too! Here’s how much it’ll affect your range though

You don’t see many electric cars towing caravans, do you? On one hand, EVs make great towing machines. They can be quite weighty, so stability is never an issue. They have tonnes of torque, so pulling a load is never a struggle. But there’s one issue, range. Attaching a trailer that’s heavy and ruins the car’s aerodynamics can have a dramatic impact on how far you can actually drive. But... Read more â€ș

Can we teach AI how to code? Welcome to IBM’s Project CodeNet

IBM’s AI research division has released a 14-million-sample dataset to develop machine learning models that can help in programming tasks. Called Project CodeNet, the dataset takes its name after ImageNet, the famous repository of labeled photos that triggered a revolution in computer vision and deep learning. While there’s a scant chance that machine learning models built on the CodeNet dataset will make human programmers redundant, there’s reason to be hopeful... Read more â€ș

Google Photos’ unlimited storage is ending on June 1— what can you do about it?

Google Photos‘ unlimited storage plan for your “high-quality” photos is ending next month. Last November, the company made the announcement without specifying any reason like if it’s running out of server space, or just want to sell you a Google One subscription for extra storage. You might be angry that Google is killing off another super handy feature. But there are no free lunches. So what are your options? We’ll... Read more â€ș

At last! Google’s Nest Thermostat will play nicely with Siri and Alexa

I love my cute lil’ Nest Thermostat — it makes my home feel like a spaceship. But there’s one thing that’s stopped me from feeling total futuristic vibes: its integration with other voice-activated assistants. Yeah, the Nest works wonderfully with Google Home, but Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa? You’d have more luck speaking to a potato. But this might change very soon. In a blog post published this week, Google... Read more â€ș

China landed its Mars rover on the first try — here’s what’s next

China’s Zhurong rover landed safely on Mars on May 15, making China only the third country to successfully land a rover on the red planet. More impressively still, China is the first Mars-going nation to carry out an orbiting, landing and rovering operation as its first mission. Planetary scientist Roberto Orosei told Nature China is “doing in a single go what NASA took decades to do”, while astrophysicist Jonathon McDowell... Read more â€ș

Facebook said it would stop recommending anti-vaccine groups. It didn’t.

Facebook broadcast a sweeping pledge in a Feb. 8 blog post: It would remove false claims about vaccines from its platform. The declaration followed a series of promises over the preceding months to curb bogus health information on its site, particularly misinformation surrounding the pandemic. This included a commitment in September to stop recommending “health groups” in order to halt the practice of people turning to fellow Facebook users instead... Read more â€ș

New superstring theory says black holes may be portals to other universes

We don’t know very much about our universe. We’re fairly certain it exists, but we don’t know how it got here, how long it’s been here, or how big it is. Heck, we don’t even know if our universe is unique. Ever since Albert Einstein came up with the theory of relativity and other scientists realized that classical physics and quantum mechanics don’t really line up, we’ve been trying to...
