This professional grade Mirobot 6-Axis Mini Robot Arm is just the tool engineering students need.

TLDR: This amazingly precise robotic arm is a perfect tool for up-and-coming engineers, designed to teach the principles of manufacturing robotics right from your desktop. Let’s get something out of the way quickly here. While there are any number of both fun and educational tinkerer sets to choose from out there, most are fundamentally toys. Oh sure, the lessons they offer and some of the functions they serve are certainly... Read more

This game gives you 30 seconds to spend Elon Musk’s grotesque net worth

What would you do if you were one of the richest people on earth? I imagine you’d generously donate all your money to charity — which is probably why you’re reading about Elon Musk rather than living like him. The Tesla tycoon briefly topped the Bloomberg Billionaires Index earlier this year, although he’s since slipped down to third place, behind space rival Jeff Bezos and LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault. Still,... Read more

1 in 5 cars produced in Germany are plug-ins — but it’s still dwarfed by China

According to the latest data from the German Association of Automotive industry (VDA) and Schimdt Automotive Research, Germany has reached an impressive milestone. For the first time, one in five cars produced in the country are now plug-ins! During March, 74,000 of the total 373,900 passenger cars produced were xEVs, meaning all vehicles capable of charging with an external cable (BEVs, PHEVs). In fact, BEV and PHEVs scored their highest... Read more

How Apple reportedly gave up control of iCloud for business growth in China

China is one of the biggest markets in the world for Apple’s products. In its recent quarterly results, the company registered a whopping $17.7 billion in iPhone sales in the region. However, this stellar business performance comes at a cost of user privacy and ceding control over its own ecosystem. According to a new report from The New York Times, Apple gave in to China’s multiple demands, including custom hardware... Read more

What does Tesla’s U-turn on Bitcoin payments mean for the future of cryptocurrencies?

Tesla’s relationship with cryptocurrencies has been a stop-start rollercoaster. In February, the electric vehicle manufacturer announced it had purchased US$1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) of Bitcoin and planned to accept the cryptocurrency in future as a means of payment from its customers. The price of the largest cryptocurrency surged that day from just over US$39,000 to US$46,000, on its way to an all-time high of almost US$65,000 in April – and... Read more

5 things that weigh as much as the electric Hummer

Hummers are heavy. Electric cars are heavy. What happens when you put the two together? Well, they have an obnoxiously heavy baby. But seriously, I didn’t quite believe it when I first saw it. According to GM Trucks, the upcoming GMC Hummer EV will weigh 9,046 lbs, that’s just over 4,000 kgs. Ranger Rovers, which everyone knows are massive, weigh around 2,500 kgs. The electric Hummer is likely to be... Read more

EVs and green policies aren’t enough: Transport CO2 emissions will rise 16% by 2050

The International Transport Forum (ITF) presented its latest projections at the global summit of transport ministers, and they don’t look encouraging for the planet’s environmental goals. Specifically, global transport activity is expected to more than double by 2050, while traffic emissions will rise by 16% compared to 2015. And that’s even if existing commitments to cut down carbon emissions are carried out. Based on projections from 2015, today urban mobility... Read more

Here’s how you should price your deep tech startup’s product

There’s no universally agreed-upon definition of a “deep tech” startup, but in my experience, they’re usually product-centered businesses whose vision is set out by technical founders that focus on scientific and engineering innovations.  That means their culture is usually all about the product, with founders and core teams rarely having any interest in, or giving thought to, their marketing and sales strategy. While this focus can be a strength in... Read more

How biased algorithms and moderation are censoring activists on social media

Following Red Dress Day on May 5, a day aimed to raise awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), Indigenous activists and supporters of the campaign found posts about MMIWG had disappeared from their Instagram accounts. In response, Instagram released a tweet saying that this was “a widespread global technical issue not related to any particular topic,” followed by an apology explaining that the platform “experienced a... Apple took the music world by storm last night with its new lossless tier announcement. The company is offering high-fidelity music streaming for all Apple Music subscribers for free. The iPhone maker will offer lossless quality in three tiers.  CD-quality (16-bit depth/44.1KHz sampling rate), 24-bit depth/48KHz, 24-bit depth/192KHz sampling rate. [Read: What’s bit depth? The Sonos Roam is an excellent Bluetooth speaker, and we’ve got the data to prove it

Smart speakers and portable speakers get a bad rap in the audiophile world, and the Sonos Roam is both smart and portable. But as we showed with Google’s Nest Audio, there’s no reason wireless speakers can’t bring serious sound quality. The Sonos Roam, like the Sonos Move before it, is a pretty rad little Bluetooth speaker –and we’ve got the data to show why. First things first, my colleague Callum... Read more

Apple and Amazon make lossless music a free upgrade, but that sucks for artists

In a surprisingly coordinated announcement, both Amazon Music and Apple Music announced they were making lossless audio a free upgrade. In two fell swoops, premium audio services like Tidal and Deezer are likely being forced to re-evaluate their pricing structure, and the folks at Spotify are likely rethinking the price of their upcoming HiFi tier. Apple announced it was bringing lossless to Apple Music in June, starting at CD Quality... Read more

Crunch kills: Nearly 750,000 deaths linked to ‘overwork’ every year

In a massive study spanning 194 countries and accounting for billions of people, the World Health Organization (WHO) has compiled incredible evidence linking as many as 750,000 deaths per year to overwork. Here’s the scary part: The WHO defines “overwork” as spending more than 55 hours per week on the job. That makes it a very serious issue for employees in industries that experience crunch such as STEM and gaming,... Read more

Why you should be very wary of AI that ‘processes’ college video applications

To the graduating class of 2021 I have but one piece of advice for you: watch out for snake oil. Artificial intelligence is a backbone technology that’s as important as the internet or electricity. But it’s also a field so rife with scams that even institutions of higher learning are getting duped by smooth-talking marketing teams and BS AI. The long and short of it is that colleges and universities... Read more

Why on earth is Michelin launching special ‘EV tires’?

Michelin recently launched two types of tires in China, specifically made for electric vehicles. The new tires are meant to show Michelin’s “concern for Chinese consumers and the company’s development strategy,” Shanghai Daily reports.  But… why would EVs need special tires to begin with? Well, it all boils down to weight. EVs generally weigh more than gasguzzlers, which means they wear tires down much faster. Also, worn tires will reduce... Read more
