I lost my weekend to Power Wash Simulator, and I regret nothing

When I told a few friends over the weekend that I was spending hours cleaning virtual houses and cars with a power washer on my PC, some of them didn’t exactly share my enthusiasm. Not everyone will appreciate the joys of Power Wash Simulator, and that’s okay But I’m here to remind you that, once in a while — and especially during the pandemic — you just need a simple... When will the first baby be born in space?

When the first baby is born off-Earth, it will be a milestone as momentous as humanity’s first steps out of Africa. Such a birth would mark the beginning of a multi–planet civilization for the human species. For the first half-century of the Space Age, only governments launched satellites and people into Earth orbit. No longer. Hundreds of private space companies are building a new industry that already has US$300 billion... Read more

Instagram might soon send you 2FA codes via WhatsApp

Two-factor authentication is one of the most basic steps you can take to make your account more secure. A lot of apps use SMS-based authentication to send you a One Time Password (OPT) as the second factor of verification. However, researchers have noted that that relying on SMS can be less secure, as hackers have been using techniques like SIM Swapping to redirect 2FA codes. To solve that problem, Instagram... Green hydrogen could be the key to our future energy demand

The global population is growing at a rapid rate. Estimates predict that by 2050, we’ll reach almost ten billion people. A growing population also means growing demand for energy to power our homes, businesses, transportation, and more.  One of the biggest challenges we face as a society is how to meet this demand, while at the same time lowering global CO2 emissions. The solution? It’s no surprise that we need... Read more

We’re entering the age of ‘digital nationalism’ — and this will only benefit big tech

However, as foreign governments and competing platforms try to erode this domination, platforms are becoming a new sphere of geopolitical manoeuvring. The European Union wants to gain more control over international tech companies and achieve more independence in the digital arena. India has banned 177 Chinese apps on the... Read more

Why India is asking Twitter and Facebook to remove posts mentioning an ‘Indian variant’

The Indian government has asked social media companies such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to remove all posts that refer to one of the new coronavirus strains as the “Indian variant.” In a notice issued on Friday, the country’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) said that posts mentioning “Indian variant” count as false news. New experiment: Clocks consuming more energy are more accurate… ’cause thermodynamics

Clocks pervade our lives, from the cellular clocks inside our bodies to the atomic clocks that underlie satellite navigation. These atomic clocks can measure time accurately to within one second in billions of years. But there could be a price to pay for this accuracy, in the form of energy. Our new experiment found clocks that measure time more accurately consume more energy than their less accurate counterparts. This suggests... Read more

What’s the difference between human eyes and computer vision?

Since the early years of artificial intelligence, scientists have dreamed of creating computers that can “see” the world. As vision plays a key role in many things we do every day, cracking the code of computer vision seemed to be one of the major steps toward developing artificial general intelligence. But like many other goals in AI, computer vision has proven to be easier said than done. In 1966, scientists... Read more

Review with measurements: Polk’s Reserve R200 is budget hi-fi greatness

Polk Audio, the American speaker company known for making hi-fi speakers at non-absurd prices, announced the Reserve series back in March. Shortly thereafter reviews flooded the web singing the speakers’ praises, particularly their bang for your buck. Naturally, I had to get my hands on a pair myself to see what all the hype was about — and put the speaker through the test bench. I chose the Reserve R200,... Read more

Hackers foiled by ‘shape-shifting’ processor

We have developed and tested a secure new computer processor that thwarts hackers by randomly changing its underlying structure, thus making it virtually impossible to hack. Last summer, 525 security researchers spent three months trying to hack our Morpheus processor as well as others. All attempts against Morpheus failed. This study was part of a program sponsored by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Program Agency to design a secure processor... Read more

What would happen if we connected the human brain to a quantum computer?

Uber and Lyft will support California’s EV mandate — but only if they get more money

On Thursday, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) unanimously voted for a regulation that requires the electrification of the state’s ridesharing fleets starting in 2023, Reuters reports. According to CARB’s announcement, the regulation dictates that by 2030 rideshare companies should achieve a level of zero greenhouse gas emissions and ensure that 90% of their vehicle miles are fully electric. This brings into question Uber and Lyft both of which announced... Read more
