The British Department for Transport (DfT) plans to make EV charging points as iconic as the red phone boxes designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott back in 1926, The Telegraph reports.  Specifically, the DfT is offering a £200,000 ($283,400) contract to a design team that can develop an “iconic, functional public electric vehicle charge point.”  The government believes that, by making charging points more appealing to the eye, it can... Buying a smart toy or fitness tracker? Research how safe they are first

The wearable technology market is booming, with half a billion wearables sold globally in 2020. Apps on these devices, or the devices themselves, often claim to monitor our health to spot illnesses, track our workouts to help us reach our fitness goals, or keep an eye on our children’s whereabouts to enhance their safety. But they’re also divisive. Supporters of wearable technology claim that health trackers should be prescribed by... Read more

How vertical battery packs could boost EV range, and improve aerodynamics

EV automakers have mostly relied on the skateboard chassis as the mainstream way of integrating a battery into an electric vehicle. But British start-up Page-Roberts revealed a concept with a vertical EV battery design, which it claims reduces manufacturing costs up to 36%, and enables 30% more vehicle range. Why? As per the company, the skateboard structure has two main disadvantages: increased size and weight. According to CEO Freddy Page-Roberts,... Read more

We need a global crackdown on Bitcoin mining to curb its monstrous energy demands

Huge concrete data centers, permanently plugged into power plants and telephone exchanges, maintain much of online life. But the infrastructure behind internet-based cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, dogecoin and ethereum is more like a rusty traveling circus. And right now, that circus is on the road. Bitcoin relies on a network of millions of specialist machines, known as miners, around 70% of which are currently based in China. Like a never-ending... Read more

You aren’t taking enough time off — and neither are your employees

How many days off have you taken in the last 12 months? Can you count those days on your fingers? Do you even remember the last time you took a proper break? When I started writing this article I double-checked how many days’ holiday I’d taken off in the last year and I was surprised by how low the number was.  I’m sure many of you are in a similar... WhatsApp might soon call you to verify your account

When you buy a new phone and restore your WhatsApp account, the app verifies by sending you a six-digit code through SMS. However, the company’s working on another method to verify your account: flash calls. According to a report by reliable WABetaInfo, the chat app is testing this ability on Android. Here’s how it’ll work: you can opt-in to receive a call for verification instead of an SMS code. WhatsApp... Read more

The rush to commercialize AI is creating major security risks

At this year’s International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR), a team of researchers from the University of Maryland presented an attack technique meant to slow down deep learning models that have been optimized for fast and sensitive operations. The attack, aptly named DeepSloth, targets “adaptive deep neural networks,” a range of deep learning architectures that cut down computations to speed up processing. Recent years have seen growing interest in the... Read more

This spike in temperature, despite the increased distance from the Sun’s main energy source, has been observed in most... Read more
