Volvo bets on fossil fuel-free steel for the future of car making

Volvo has joined forces with Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB to explore the development of fossil fuel-free steel for its cars. This makes Volvo the first automaker to embark on the search of a green alternative for steel production, which is otherwise responsible for about 7% of global direct carbon emissions. Specifically, steelmaking has a big carbon footprint, generating last year over 3 billion tons of CO2. That’s because the furnaces... Read more â€ș

Broke? Think long and hard before using buy-now-pay-later apps

Whether you use Klarna all the time or have barely heard of it, it’s time to start paying attention: the buy-now-pay-later app has just become the biggest private fintech company in Europe. Klarna has completed a new round of fundraising, valuing it at US$46 billion (ÂŁ33 billion). That’s four times what it was worth last September, and on a par with fellow Swedish tech giant Spotify. Klarna offers interest-free credit... Read more â€ș

Ikea’s picture frame speakers are awesome aside from the shitty art

I have a dilemma. I both love and hate Ikea’s latest audio gadget, its picture frame speakers. Over the past few years, Ikea has been working with Sonos to produce a range of Symfonisk speakers. The philosophy behind these have been bringing audio into everyday items. And, when I first heard about the just-announced picture frame speakers, I gushed with excitement. The idea of populating my house with them made... Read more â€ș

How to scale your startup without a sales team

Let’s get one thing out of the way early: I’m not anti-sales. I’d just say I’m more pro-customer and product. And by focusing on these two areas, I’ve been able to scale my company to more than 20,000 customers in 90 countries without a sales team.  Before jumping on the no-sales train, though, I think it’s essential you first understand why I’ve developed this philosophy.   Putting customers on the same... Twitter could lose its safe harbor in India — but it’s complicated

Twitter might lose its safe harbor protection in India, as the company is yet to comply with the country’s new intermediary rules. This means it’ll be liable for all content posted on the site by users and can be subject to penal action. But it’s not straightforward. While there’s no official word, government sources told ANI that it’s the only major social network that hasn’t taken necessary steps to comply... Read more â€ș

Review: Roguebook is the most polished roguelike deckbuilder I’ve played

Roguebook is a delightful little deckbuilding roguelike from developer Abrakim Entertainment SA, the makers of Faeria. While the genre’s become a bit saturated over the last few years, Roguebook has a lot going for it. For starters, legendary game developer Richard Garfield – the creator of Magic: The Gathering – was involved in the creation and development of the game. What really caught my eye, however, was the fact that... Read more â€ș

Web’s daddy jumps aboard NFT hype train — but is he already too late?

The NFT bandwagon attracts a curious mix of passengers, from celebrity robots to convicted animal abusers. The latest luminary to grab a ticket is British inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who’s auctioning off his original source code for the web as a non-fungible token. [Read: Why entrepreneurship in emerging markets matters] For those of you lucky enough to have missed the hype train, NFTs are unique digital tokens secured by blockchain... Read more â€ș

Why ‘never speak for free at events’ is bullshit

Every now and then, a recurring tweet shows up in my timeline. It will be someone complaining about being asked to speak for free at events and doing it ‘for the exposure.’ These complaints usually get a lot of support in the form of likes, retweets, and people replying “You should NEVER speak for free!” I don’t agree at all. That’s why I’d like to offer a different perspective on... Read more â€ș

US lawmakers are targeting big tech in a big way, and it’s going to affect us all

Five antitrust laws proposed in the United States aim to aggressively rein in the market power of “big tech” companies and change the way they do business. The set of bills, introduced on June 11, targets the enormous economic power wielded by the likes of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google (owned by parent company Alphabet). The expansive proposals range from breaking up different businesses run by big tech, to more... Read more â€ș

COVID-19 increased reckless driving in the US — road traffic deaths up 7% last year

Last year, 38,680 people died on the US roads, according to preliminary estimates of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Sadly, that’s the highest projected number since 2007.  Although Americans drove less during the pandemic (13% less vehicle miles traveled), NHTSA found that crash fatalities in 2020 – including motor vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and pedalcyclists – increased by 7.2%, as compared to the 36,096 fatalities reported in 2019.... Google Chrome is testing two new features for tab addicts

I have a confession to make: I’m a tab addict. My browser is so stuffed with the bastards that they’re practically microscopic. It puts my poor laptop under so much strain, sometimes I hear it scream. The folks at Google must have heard the cries, because they’re working on new ways to help manage the addition. Reddit user Leopeva64-2 spotted an option in the Canary build version of Chrome that... Read more â€ș

Twitter’s testing a ‘DON’T @ ME BRO’ feature

One of the most annoying things about Twitter is someone mentioning you in a conversation you’re not interested in and blowing up your notifications. Currently, you can only mute the conversation. However, Twitter is working on a new feature that lets you “unmention” yourself from it. Dominic Camozzi, a privacy designer at Twitter, showed off some early concepts of how the feature might work. Sometimes you want to talk, and... Read more â€ș

We’ve got a plastic problem — and spider silk may be the solution

Plastics are very useful materials. They’ve contributed significant benefits to modern society. But the unprecedented amount of plastics produced over the past few decades has caused serious environmental pollution. Packaging alone was responsible for 46% out of 340 million tonnes of plastic waste generated globally in 2018. Although plastic recycling has increased significantly in recent years, most plastics used today are single-use, non-recyclable and non-biodegradable. The demand for food will... Read more â€ș

Windows 10 has only 4 years left to live (officially)

Microsoft will soon announce the next version of Windows on June 24. But before that happens, the company has already declared that it’s ending support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. As noted by Thurrott, this is the first time the firm has specified an end date for the entire operating system. Windows 10 was originally unveiled in 2015, so it will have had a good run of 10... Is ‘brain drift’ the key to machine consciousness?

Think about someone you love and the neurons in your brain will light up like a Christmas tree. But if you think about them again, will the same lights go off? Chances are: the answer’s no. And that could have big implications for the future of AI. A team of neuroscientists from the University of Columbia in New York recently published research demonstrating what they refer to as “representational drift”... Read more â€ș

New Amazon robots could enable ‘safer’ exploitation of warehouse staff

Weeks after a study revealed that Amazon warehouse workers are injured at higher rates than staff at rival firms, the company has revealed it’s testing new robots designed to improve employee safety. The e-commerce giant has ingratiatingly named two of the bots after Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie. Bert is an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) that’s built to navigate through Amazon facilities.
