UK startup launches ‘world’s first’ AI deepfake-detecting browser

UK startup Surf Security has launched a beta version of what it claims is the world’s first browser with a built-in feature designed to spot AI-generated deepfakes.  The tool, available through Surf’s browser or as an extension, can detect with up to 98% accuracy whether the person you’re interacting with online is a real human or an AI imitation, the company said.  The London-based cybersecurity upstart uses “military-grade” neural network... Speeding ebikes are a new menace. Amsterdam wants to remote-control them

A few weeks back, Amsterdam announced it was trialling new technology that can automatically reduce ebike speed when riders enter certain parts of the city.   Predictably, the initiative sparked debate. On Reddit, some expressed concerns about data privacy and state nannying, while others felt that stricter measures were needed to protect other road users from ebikes, especially those with aftermarket mods that make them go faster. Some felt the technology... Read more â€ș

Artificial pancreas that pumps insulin into diabetes patients launches on NHS

In a potentially transformative move for healthcare, the NHS is rolling out an “artificial pancreas” for people suffering from type 1 diabetes. Known as the Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) system, the artificial pancreas is a device that significantly automates the management of blood sugar and insulin levels — a necessary process for those living with the condition. Specifically, the device continuously monitors blood sugar (glucose) levels, determines the amount of... Read more â€ș

What it’d take for the EU to ban TikTok

The US is getting increasingly aggressive about TikTok. In March, the House of Representatives passed a bill that could see the Chinese social media app banned across the entire country due to security concerns. If signed into law, the bill would give ByteDance — the company that owns TikTok — six months to sell the platform. If this doesn’t happen, TikTok won’t be accessible to users in the United States.... Read more â€ș

Digital mindfulness could help reduce the effects of technostress at work

Technology-related stress, overload, and anxiety are common problems in today’s workplace, potentially leading to higher burnout and poorer health. Many of these issues are likely to have increased since remote working became much more widespread following the pandemic. In 2022, along with colleagues at the University of Nottingham, I conducted a review of the academic literature on the downsides of digital working. We looked at nearly 200 studies from over... Cosmic rays, XR, and ‘multiverse’ quantum computing — welcome to EIC’s deeptech Scaling Club

“Do you believe in the multiverse?” our petite and cheerful guide Angelina asked me when I told her what I do for a living, while navigating the rambunctious street’s of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. It was not a conversation I was expecting to have on a vegan street food tour in Vietnam, but as Angelina studies AI and VR (and as we are both avid Marvel fans), our chat took a... Read more â€ș

Astroforensics could be one of the coolest new careers of the future

Nasa’s Artemis program is scheduled to return astronauts to the Moon and establish a permanent orbiting laboratory by the end of the decade. Meanwhile, private companies are making significant steps in taking paying customers further into space. As humanity’s footprint expands beyond the familiar terrains of Earth to the Moon and possibly beyond, an intriguing new field emerges from the final frontier: astroforensics. This discipline, still in its infancy, is... Read more â€ș

Scientists think ‘collective AI’ will resemble Star Trek’s Borg — only nicer (hopefully)

Leading computer scientists have unveiled a vision of “collective AI” that resembles Star Trek species the Borg. Researchers from MIT, Yale, and Loughborough University explained the concept in a study published this week in Nature Machine Intelligence. The paper describes separate AI units continuously acquiring new knowledge and skills. They would then share the information across a network. Together, the collective would turn their insights into mutual benefits. Multiple skills,... Read more â€ș

This snowboard is made from paper — and it shreds like a dream

Professional freeride snowboarder Cody Bramwell carves through the deep white powder, left-right-left-right, down the mountainside. He’s snow surfing, a unique, bind-less style of snowboarding invented in Japan in the 1980s.  Rather than focusing on speed and tricks, snow surfing is about finding the flow of the mountain, keeping speed through flat sections and becoming one with the terrain. The sport is best practised in fresh, uncompressed powder, as opposed to... Read more â€ș

UK says Chinese cyberattacks ‘part of large-scale espionage campaign’

The UK government has accused China of two malicious cyberattacks against the country’s democratic institutions and members of Parliament. Specifically, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has found that a Chinesestate-affiliated cyber actor, nicknamed Advanced Persistent Threat Group 31 (APT31), was almost certainly responsible for online reconnaissance activity in 2021, targeting the email accounts of MPs. The NCSC also deemed it highly likely that China state-backed actors were behind the... Read more â€ș
