Here’s a badass picture of plasma jets shooting out of a supermassive black hole

In 2019, when astronomers captured the first image of a black hole’s shadow — a bright orange doughnut-shaped halo created by the black hole’s intense gravity bending light around it — it was rightly hailed as a breakthrough. Now, I have joined the Event Horizon Telescope team in following up on their earlier achievement, by creating a new image showing jets of plasma being ejected from the core of a... Read more â€ș

The billionaire space race epitomizes capitalism’s destructive obsession with growth

Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids, laments the Rocket Man in Elton John’s timeless classic. In fact, it’s cold as hell, but that doesn’t seem to worry a new generation of space entrepreneurs intent on colonizing the “final frontier” as fast as possible. Don’t get me wrong. I’m no sullen technophobe. As lockdown projects go, NASA’s landing of the Perseverance rover on the surface of the... Read more â€ș

Volkswagen Group NEARLY TRIPL3D its EV deliveries this year

Well, you read the title. It’s clear that the Volkswagen Group has continued to gain momentum with its electric offensive in the first half of 2021. Up to the end of June, a total of 170,939 BEV models were delivered worldwide, which works out to an increase of 165.2% compared to the same period of 2020 (64,462 units). This means that nearly thrice as many electric vehicles were sold. Interestingly,... Read more â€ș

State of the internet July ’21: Audiences swell, but advertisers are anxious

Despite the rapid increases in digital adoption and use that we’ve seen since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic more than a year ago, the latest update in the Global Digital Reports series reveals that digital growth rates remain elevated as we move into the second half of 2021. DataReportal‘s Digital 2021 July Global Statshot Report – published in partnership with Hootsuite and We Are Social – shows that social... Read more â€ș

The Apple Watch Workout app NEEDS a warmup mode — make it happen, Tim

Getting an Apple Watch last year altered my life — especially when it came to exercise. But the more I’ve used it for this, the more a specific question has arisen: why the hell doesn’t the Apple Watch workout app have a warmup mode? For the uninitiated, the in-built Workout app on the Apple Watch has a range of different sports you can select. The idea behind this is twofold.... Read more â€ș

Ditch Chrome’s dumbass tab groups on Android with this tweak

A few versions ago, Google’s Chrome browser for Android got a feature that opened new tabs in groups. This means when you click on a link, it opens that page in a little ‘folder’ — making it tough to find individual tabs while scrolling. Bless the lord: Android Police has discovered you can now turn that off. Well, if you have the current stable version 91 of Chrome that is.... Read more â€ș

Move over, Fortnite: Netflix confirms expansion into mobile games

After months of rumors, Netflix has finally confirmed one of the biggest changes to its service yet: the streaming platform is getting into gaming. Granted, we knew this indirectly as the company confirmed it had hired a new VP of Game Development last week. But today we’ve gotten even more direct confirmation. Specifically, Netflix is entering the mobile gaming space — at least to start. In a letter to investors,... Read more â€ș

The RadRover 6 Plus reimagines one of the most popular ebikes in the US

Rad Power Bikes‘ RadRover might be the most popular ebike in the US. In fact, according to the company, it’s ‘North America’s best-selling ebike,” and I see the fat-tire ebike all the time when riding around town. Now the company has gone ahead and completely redesigned the bike, bringing a more premium design (and price) with the new RadRover 6 Plus. For reference, here’s the old bike: And here’s the... Billionaire ‘cashtronauts’ should force flat-Earthers on their ego trips

While 99% of you are stuck here on Earth like a herd of disgusting millionaires – or worse, actual poor people – a bunch of billionaires have spent their summer preparing for jaunts into the inky black beyond. Honest question: who cares? I love space as much as the next person. And I think it’s amazing that humans have managed to ascend beyond the clouds and into the very stars... Read more â€ș

PSA: Sticking your arm into the vacuum of space would really suck

If you’ve watched any sci-fi shows or read any books about space, then you probably know that human bodies and vacuums don’t mix well. You’ve probably heard that all sorts of bad things happen without atmospheric pressure constantly weighing down on your flesh, not the least of which is the fact that your body will rapidly expand to about twice its size, as your skin stretched like a balloon. Have... Read more â€ș

Galleries are using AI to measure the ‘quality’ of art
 SET ME AFLAME

AI has set its destructive sights on one of life’s greatest pleasures: visiting galleries. An Italian museum has started using AI-powered cameras to measure the “attraction value” of works of art. The ShareArt devices collect visual data on spectators, such as how long they look at a painting and where on the canvas their attention is focused. “Thanks to simple data elaboration, an observer’s gaze can be translated into a... Researchers invented a new touchscreen material so we never run out

Have you ever imagined your smartphone or tablet without a touchscreen? This could soon be the case if we run out of indium, one of the rarest minerals on Earth. Indium is used in many high-tech devices such as touch screens, smartphones, solar panels, and smart windows, in the form of indium tin oxide. This compound is optically transparent and electrically conductive — the two crucial features required for touch... Read more â€ș

UK government implies current EV grant will be culled

In March, the UK government cut its electric vehicle grant for the fourth time in ten years. Specifically, it reduced the subsidy by $700 (ÂŁ500) to $3,480 (ÂŁ2,500), and capped price eligibility at $49,000 (ÂŁ35,000) from $68,000 (ÂŁ50,000). On Monday, during an interview with Autocar, Transport Decarbonization Minister Rachel Maclean defended the government’s decision and hinted that the “Plug-in Grant” might be disposed of altogether.  Supporting the cut She explained... Ethical hackers are vital in the war on cyberterrorism. This training is how you can join the fight

The New South Wales Department of Education was the victim of a cyberattack earlier this month, forcing the state department to rally to have any hope of getting their systems back online in time for the new school term in late July. ‘I don’t know’ is the best phrase for your career

I used to do sales, and I found three words very helpful: “I don’t know.” The internet is full of articles for salespeople offering alternatives to saying those three words, all with elaborate ways to avoid admitting ignorance. And I get it: telling someone you don’t know something is hard, especially when you’re trying to convince that person to give you money. But that’s why saying “I don’t know” is... Read more â€ș

New research tries to explain consciousness with
 quantum physics

One of the most important open questions in science is how our consciousness is established. In the 1990s, long before winning the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for his prediction of black holes, physicist Roger Penrose teamed up with anaesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff to propose an ambitious answer. They claimed that the brain’s neuronal system forms an intricate network and that the consciousness this produces should obey the rules of quantum... Read more â€ș

70% of EU’s charging stations are found in just 3 countries

A new data analysis by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) found that the there’s a risk of a “two-track Europe”developing during the switch to electric vehicles. According to the research, the unbalanced distribution of charging points across the EU is too clear to go unnoticed.  Specifically, 70% of all charging stations in the bloc are concentrated in just three countries: the Netherlands (66,665), France (45,751), and Germany (44,538). Apple’s MagSafe battery pack IS NOT FUNNY

People, listen. I need you to stop. There’s no need to make fun of Apple’s MagSafe battery pack. You’re upsetting Tim Cook. And, by proxy, me. There is NOTHING FUNNY about the new product. Is it okay to be a little surprised about the MagSafe battery pack? Of course. Especially when Apple shows us an image of a product like this: So sleek, so fancy. And then, in reality, it...
