Telegram is a great Google Meet alternative for long video calls — but only on your phone

Thanks to the pandemic, I’ve had to participate in at least a few video calls every week, either for work or to catch up with friends. Most platforms were great to use last year, when they offered unlimited free calls and other features at no cost. But now, these platforms have been scaling back on free features. Last month, Google Meet limited its free group calls to 60 minutes. That... Read more

We must include more women in physics — it’d benefit all of humanity

All around the world, there is an extreme gender imbalance in physics, in both academia and industry. Examples are all too easy to find. In Burkina Faso’s largest university, the University of Ouagadougou, 99% of physics students are men. In Germany, women comprise only 24% of physics PhD graduates — creeping up from 21% in 2017. No women graduated in physical sciences at the University of El Salvador between 2017... Read more

Everything you need to know about stablecoins

Stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency linked to an asset like the U.S. dollar that doesn’t change much in value. The majority of the dozens of stablecoins that currently exist use the dollar as their benchmark asset, but many are also pegged to other fiat currencies issued by governments like the euro and yen. Can your PC handle Windows 11? Here’s how to find out

Microsoft just released the first public and stable beta for Windows 11, but not everyone will be able to install it. Even some of the company’s own Surface devices won’t be able to run Windows 11, so here’s... Read more

How to get the most out of Python classes

There should only be one — and preferably only one — obvious way to do it”, says the Zen of Python. Yet there are areas where even seasoned programmers debate what the right or wrong way to do things is. One of these areas is Python classes. Borrowed from Object-Oriented Programming, they’re quite beautiful constructs that you can expand and modify as you code. The big problem is that classes... Read more

How gravitational forces stop Earth’s asymmetrical core from tipping us over

More than 5,000 kilometers beneath us, Earth’s solid metal inner core wasn’t discovered until 1936. Almost a century later, we’re still struggling to answer basic questions about when and how it first formed. These aren’t easy puzzles to solve. We can’t directly sample the inner core, so the key to unravelling its mysteries lies in collaboration between seismologists, who indirectly sample it with seismic waves, geodynamicists, who create models of...
