How a couple of ex-Googlers are trying to fix what’s wrong with search engines

There’s no doubt that for most folks on the internet, search is synonymous with Google. However, there’s a small yet growing audience that wants a privacy-first search experience with little or no ads. That’s where Neeva comes in. This new search engine from ex-Googlers, Sridhar Ramaswamy and Vivek Raghunathan, guarantees two things: an ad-free experience and advanced features for all its customers. What’s on offer? The company launched last year... Read more ›

How Bo Burnham’s Jeff Bezos song became a Gen Z anthem about disaster capitalism

June 12th is one of the most important days of the year. That’s right, it’s the birthday of Jeff Bezos. While ingrates mark the milestone by insolently asking the entrepreneur to stop union-busting, we want to celebrate the joyous occasion with a song: Bo Burnham’s “Bezos I.” The lyrics tell the touching tale of Jeffrey’s selfless mission to become a tech oligarch. The track was a highlight of Burnham’s Netflix... Read more ›

EVs are un-American, study finds

Biden might be pushing for electrification, but Americans aren’t onboard. Well, that’s what a study by Deloitte has found at least. Amongst the 1,031 American respondents, nearly two-thirds preferred sticking to conventional gas-guzzlers for their next vehicle purchase. Some 17% would consider a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), while only 5% would get a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or a battery electric vehicle (BEV). Conversely, consumer interest in BEVs is highest in... People love small phones, so how come no one’s buying them?

Earlier this week, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in his newsletter that Apple is gearing up to launch a new version of the diminutive iPhone SE, this time with 5G connectivity to bring it up to speed with the latest handsets on the market. There was great excitement in our newsroom because we love compact phones, and don’t hear about many compact phones every year. That also got us thinking: why... Read more ›

The UK has to step up its EV battery production to compete with the EU

Car manufacturing in the UK stalled dramatically last year. The head of the industry trade body described the situation as the “toughest in decades”, and the numbers certainly back up his claim. The latest car registration figures show that 2021 was up just 1% on a COVID-ravaged 2020 – and production actually went into reverse gear. In November 2021, UK car production dropped by almost 29%, the fifth consecutive month... Read more ›

This private equity firm is amassing companies that collect data on America’s children

By: Todd Feathers Over the past six years, a little-known private equity firm, Vista Equity Partners, has built an educational software empire that wields unseen influence over the educational journeys of tens of millions of children. Along the way, The Markup found, the companies the firm controls have scooped up a massive amount of very personal data on kids, which they use to fuel a suite of predictive analytics products... Spotify HiFi is delayed indefinitely, and I think I know why

Spotify Hifi’s announcement in February of 2021 seemed poised to shake up the streaming industry. With the introduction of lossless audio, Spotify would increase its credibility among audiophiles, not just casual listeners. Even if most people can’t tell the difference between lossless and high-bitrate compressed music, it indicated Spotify was paying more attention to sound quality. At the time, Spotify said that HiFi would launch “later this year” and that... Read more ›

Alphabet to spinout out quantum company after Google’s time crystal breakthrough

Alphabet’s reportedly planning to promote one of its Moonshot projects from venture to business in a bid to take advantage of its recent breakthroughs in the field of quantum computing. It was only a matter of time. Time crystals, that is. Up front: Last year’s big story in the physics world was Google and its partner’s breakthrough experiment in creating a new phase of matter inside a quantum computer called... Read more ›

EU plans to tackle online child abuse spark surveillance concerns

The scale of child sexual exploitation and abuse online is increasing at an alarming rate. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) recently announced that it’s finding more finding 15 times as much child sexual abuse material (CSAM) online as it was a decade ago. This content is particularly prevalent in Europe. According to a 2020 report by the IWF, most web pages hosting CSAM are based in the continent. In response,... Read more ›

Apple paid App Store devs $260B — and leeched over $100B from their labor

On first glance, that’s a breathtakingly impressive number: $260 billion. Developers on Apple’s App Store earned a quarter of a trillion dollars since its launch in 2008. Consider just how many companies and independents that cash has breathed life into, it’s staggering. But that’s not the whole story. If App Store devs have made $260 billion since 2008, that means Apple has potentially made over a hundred billion for doing,... Read more ›

Why VCs aren’t getting into the crypto game — yet

As with any new innovation, it takes some time before the incumbents in the sector fully adopt change. The same is true for crypto. Just a few years ago, early adopters hit the headlines, with young, tech savvy, amateur investors becoming rich overnight. Today, with the influx of easy-to-use crypto trading apps and, even the adoption of the digital currencies by governments, it’s now on the cusp of mainstream adoption.... Read more ›

Don’t Look Up: How we should deal with asteroid threats in real life

Don’t look now – but we are currently experiencing a rash of stories about a forthcoming global catastrophe. But in a change from reports of pandemics and climate change, this global catastrophe is produced by the impact of a giant asteroid. Or comet. Or both. This may feel extra ominous given the events in the recent Netflix film “Don’t Look Up”, in which the Earth is threatened by a “planet... Read more ›

OnePlus’ flagship phone is one of the most anticipated devices for Android fans every year, given the company’s track record of delivering lots of bang for your buck. The coolest PC hardware we saw at CES 2022

Every year, PC makers flock to CES to show off their latest hardware. Well, except the last couple of years, where the pandemic has made the event a more subdued, semi-virtual affair (the idea of attending a traditional, stuffed-like-sardines CES show floor is basically nightmare material in the age of coronavirus). Still, PC makers announced some cool stuff, and our list below showcases some of our favorite PC hardware from... Read more ›

How brain-computers could make the Matrix real

The problem with reality is that it tends to insist upon itself. Scientists have long pondered whether we might actually live in a simulation. But that doesn’t change our experience. If we’re in the Matrix, it’s a very convincing lie. Which brings us to the obvious question: is it even possible for humans to “live” inside of a computer simulation? One way to answer that would be to build one... Read more ›

5 criminals caught by Detective Google Maps

Google Maps wears many hats. While mere civilians use the app for navigation, location information, or, err stalking people, cops tap the app to find criminals. You may be surprised to learn that law enforcement officials in the US routinely mine Google’s location data in criminal investigations. The tactic has sparked fears of privacy violations and false arrests, but it’s also led to a range of arrests. Here are five... Read more ›

The MacBook Pro turned 16 and it’s finally good again

It seems weird there was a time when the MacBook Pro didn’t exist. Apple’s most premium portable computer is an integral part of its lineup, something I associate with the company as much as the iPhone. All things have to start somewhere though — and the MacBook Pro’s public life began on January 10, 2006. It was at Macworld in San Francisco where Steve Jobs unveiled Apple’s new computer, which...
