Codifying humanity: Why AI sucks at content moderation

Welcome to “Codifying Humanity.” A new Neural series that analyzes the machine learning world’s attempts at creating human-level AI. Previous entries include Can humor be reduced to an algorithm? and Why robots should fear death as much as we do. Meta (the company your grandparents still call Facebook) just unveiled a new AI system it calls “an important milestone that signals a shift toward more intelligent, generalized AI systems.” It’s... Leaded gasoline was poisoning us for a century and the car industry knew

On the frosty morning of Dec. 9, 1921, in Dayton, Ohio, researchers at a General Motors lab poured a new fuel blend into one of their test engines. Immediately, the engine began running more quietly and putting out more power. The new fuel was tetraethyl lead. With vast profits in sight – and very few public health regulations at the time – General Motors Co. rushed gasoline diluted with tetraethyl... Read more

AirTags let you find your keys and… help criminals steal your car

When Apple launched its AirTags in June, I got rather excited — finally, I could connect my iPhone with a device to track my keys and wallet. As someone who constantly looses their stuff (yes, I know, shame on me), I was easily sold. But did I ever stop to think whether someone could use an AirTag to steal my car? Nope, but apparently that’s a thing now. Last week,... Read more

The Financial Tech sector in particular is thriving. In fact, the global FinTech market is predicted to grow at a rate of almost 25% annually over the next couple of years, making it one of the most exciting industries to be involved in... Read more

How 1800s census screw-ups kickstarted America’s computing industry

The US Constitution requires that a population count be conducted at the beginning of every decade. This census has always been charged with political significance, and continues to be. That’s clear from the controversies in the run-up to the 2020 census. But it’s less widely known how important the census has been in developing the US computer industry, a story that I tell in my book, Republic of Numbers: Unexpected... Read more

How to use a password manager — and choose the right one for you

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. What we learned from Instagram head’s Congress testimony

Adam Mosseri, who took over Instagram in 2018, appeared in front of Congress for the first time last night. The company came under major scrutiny after a series of reports from the Wall Street Journal published earlier this year highlighted the firm’s negligence toward teen mental health. Ex-Meta employee and whistleblower Frances Haugen said last month Instagram was “more dangerous than other forms of social media.” All of this led... Read more

Apple Car’s woes continue as 3 key staff move to flying taxi companies

Just last week, I called bullshit on the 2025 launch date for the rumored Apple Car. I say rumored as Apple has never publicly confirmed that they are actually making an autonomous electric vehicle.  A rendered image of what an iCar might look like. Credit: Vanarama. One of the issues I raised is that Apple hiring Christofer “CJ” Moore, previous director for Tesla’s Autopilot software, is not necessarily a sign... Read more

Android users can’t dial 911 because of… Microsoft Teams?

I’m not gonna sit here and decry current technology, quite the opposite. To this very day, there’s something magical about smartphones. I can use them to watch movies, make music, work… anything, really. Despite this, I — a caveman — still expect my pocket rectangle to do one basic thing: be a phone. And this means doing things like calling 911. Normally, this isn’t an issue, but it could be... Read more

Building an iOS app? Avoid these critical App Store roadblocks

Apple’s App Store is a holy grail for businesses, offering access to an audience of about half a billion people per week, according to the technology giant. But that doesn’t mean landing an app in the digital marketplace is easy. Apple has said it rejected almost 1 million new apps vying for inclusion in the App Store in 2020, along with nearly a million updates to existing apps. Building an... Read more

Apple won’t have to include third-party payments in App Store just now, thanks to a stay

Update (09/12/2021): Just before the deadline for implementing third-party App Store payments passed, Apple won the appeal for a stay in the Ninth Circuit. That means we won’t see any alternative payment methods for in-app purchases on iPhones and iPads just yet.  In the judgment, the Nith Circuit Court said that the tech giant’s appeal brought serious concerns about the district court’s judgment passed in September:  Apple has demonstrated, at... Instagram is finally bringing back chronological feeds in 2022

For years, Instagram has insisted that its algorithmic feed is better than a chronological one. Ever since the latter was abandoned in 2016, many users have clamored for a return to the simplicity of yore. It seems these people might finally get their wish come next year. Speaking at a Senate hearing, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said Instagram is “currently working on a version of a chronological feed that we... Read more

First Snapdragon 8 benchmarks show Qualcomm’s CPU still trails Apple

Another year, another Qualcomm flagship chip that’s sure to power the majority of Android phones in the coming year. This time around though, the company decided to do things a little differently, renaming its flagship processor with the ostensibly simpler Snapdragon 8 (Gen 1) moniker and talking up gains in the processor’s performance. Alas, it still seems Qualcomm is trailing well behind Apple when it comes to raw CPU performance,... Read more

DeepMind’s new 280 billion-parameter language model kicks GPT-3’s butt in accuracy

Move over GPT-3, there’s a scrappy new contender for the crown of world’s greatest language model and it’s from our old pals over at DeepMind. Up front: The Alphabet-owned UK outfit that answered the question of whether humans or computers are better at chess once and for all – the machines won – has now set its sights on the world of large language models (LLM). To that end, today... Read more

Can galaxies without dark matter tell us how the universe ends?

Raise your hand if you live in a stable universe that’s rapidly expanding to support its own vastness. Not so fast Earthlings. We might have an end-game level crunch-time problem on our hands. Up front: Everyone’s heard of the Big Bang. And long-time Neural readers will certainly be familiar with the Big Rip. But it’s long past time we talked about the Big Crunch. This hypothetical event would be our... Read more

Courts uphold UK Uber driver classifications but mobility worker challenges remain

This week the UK Supreme Court upheld an earlier ruling in May that Uber drivers are legally classed as workers and must be treated as such.   The court ruled that it is unlawful for a Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) Operator to act as an ‘agent’ between the driver and passenger, meaning that all operators must contract directly with both drivers and riders.  What’s the importance of being classified as an... The 2021 Renault Zoe scores a pathetic zero-star safety rating in NCAP crash test

The Renault Zoe may have been Europe’s fourth best-selling EV just a few months ago, but it has seriously failed the latest crash tests by the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP).  In fact, the NCAP ‘awarded’ the 2021 Renault Zoe with zero stars for safety, ironically ruining Renault Laguna’s legacy — the first car to ever receive a five-star rating. Credit: NCAP What went wrong, Renault? Since its launch... Read more

A crypto savings account delivers huge interest — but at what cost?

Leading crypto banks such as BlockFi and Nexo are attracting a lot of attention. Customers can earn an APY (annual percentage yield) of up to 12%, dwarfing high-street savings accounts, whose interest rates are sub-1%. But before you rush to transfer your hard-earned savings, there’s some important things to be aware of. First, you need to realize what these banks are offering interest on. Apart from Nexo, which pays up... Read more

Notepad gets a new design in Windows 11, including a dark mode

Notepad is one of the most basic apps in Windows, but that’s exactly why so many people still love it: it’s a barebones text editor free of distractions. Still, I’ve got to admit it looks a little outdated by Windows 11‘s standards, but luckily a fix is on the way: Microsoft today announced a redesigned version of Notepad, currently rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Dev channel. Most note-ably,... Read more
