The first-ever sighting of an ‘invisible’ black hole could teach us how stars form

Astronomers famously snapped the first ever direct image of a black hole in 2019, thanks to material glowing in its presence. But many black holes are actually near impossible to detect. Now another team using the Hubble Space Telescope seems to have finally found something nobody has seen before: a black hole which is completely invisible. The research, which has been posted online and submitted for publication in the Astrophysical... Read more

You might not be very familiar with the name Joby, but chances are you’ve seen some of their products before. Specifically, you’ve probably come across the company’s funky-looking GorillaPods before: Though the company has long been focused on the camera accessory business, it’s recently expanded into the audio business in a big way, with a series of accessories aimed specifically at podcasters, YouTubers, streamers, and other creators. I’ve recently been... Read more

‘Doxxing’ of Bored Ape founders exposes Web3’s transparency issues

The Web3 community is in uproar over a curious case of “doxxing.” The victims of this exposure are two founders of Yuga Labs, the company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). The NFT collection has generated over $1bn in sales, but the creators of Yuga Labs had been pseudoanonymized — until now. The duo, Greg Solano and Wylie Aronow, showed their faces publicly on Friday after BuzzFeed News revealed... Read more

Newly discovered Mars zircon may hold the secret to life on the red planet

Are we alone in the Universe? Billions of dollars are being spent trying to answer that simple question. The implications of finding evidence for life beyond Earth are staggering. The “before and after” mark would punctuate human history. Mars is currently the most popular exploration target to search for evidence of life elsewhere. Yet little is known about its early history. Our research on a Martian meteorite provides new clues... Read more

I’m praying that the new AirPods Max won’t have touch controls

They say it’s a person’s flaws we fall in love with. That explains how I feel about the AirPods Max then. Apple’s over-ear headphones are one of the more intriguing products the company has released in recent years — and I’ve found them both wonderful and frustrating. Yet, I find myself feeling warm towards them. For every misstep with something like that appalling case, there’s a positive point. And one... Read more

Cryptocurrency-funded DAOs running charities isn’t as bad as it sounds

Cryptocurrency is becoming a more familiar way to pay for things. One option is as part of a crowd, through a decentralized autonomous organization. In this relatively new kind of group, also called a DAO, decisions and choices are governed by holders of one kind of cryptocurrency token, such as Ethereum or Bitcoin. DAOs also use “smart contracts” that make decisions through online votes by all participants who wish to... Read more

Devs are mad at Apple’s ‘reduction’ in Dutch App Store fees — and rightly so

Apple has finally explained how it will allow Dutch dating apps to use alternative payment systems. The headline is this: Apple will take a 27% commission from these purchases — down from the 30% it collects through the App Store. Developers across the world are mad at this nominal discount from the iPhone maker, and rightly so — especially when the new directive is incredibly complex. We’ll get into all... Read more

The US tech scene is becoming decentralized — the time is ripe for new startup cities

It’s no big secret that the US tech hubs of yore – San Francisco, New York, and Silicon Valley – have been facing increasingly stiff competition over the past decade when it comes to attracting the hottest new tech startups and scaleups. While the relative contribution of those cities in terms of newly created unicorn companies peaked in 2014, the rest of the US steadily accumulated more VC funding, leading... Read more

Can you imagine a world without Facebook and Instagram?

Meta made a chilling statement in its annual report: Facebook and Instagram may shut down in Europe if the company isn’t able to store and process data from the union’s users on US-based servers. Now, this piece isn’t looking into the background of this event — or the fact Big Zuck has made this threat before. Instead, it’s just a simple thought experiment where we imagine what the world would... Read more

Can black holes become white holes?

Can black holes become white holes? – Remy, age 9, Wangaratta, Victoria Hi Remy! Thank you for this great question. The short answer, unfortunately, is no. White holes are really just something scientists have imagined — they could exist, but we’ve never seen one, or even seen clues that one may exist. For now, they are an idea. To put it simply, you can imagine a white hole as being... Read more

Astronomers discovered a new asteroid sharing Earth’s orbit – here’s why it matters

Research has shown that the Earth trails an asteroid barely a kilometer across in its orbit about the Sun – only the second such body to have ever been spotted. It goes around the Sun on average two months ahead of the Earth, dancing around in front like an excited herald of our coming. This object, known as 2020 XL₅, was first spotted in December 2020 using Pan-STARRS telescopes on... Read more

We need to decouple AI from human brains and biases

In the summer of 1956, 10 scientists met at Dartmouth College and invented artificial intelligence. Researchers from fields like mathematics, engineering, psychology, economics, and political science got together to find out whether they could describe learning and human thinking so precisely that it could be replicated with a machine. Hardly a decade later, these same scientists contributed to dramatic breakthroughs in robotics, natural language processing, and computer vision. Although a... Read more

Is Bitcoin technically a religion? A scholar investigates

Read enough about Bitcoin, and you’ll inevitably come across people who refer to the cryptocurrency as a religion. Bloomberg’s Lorcan Roche Kelly called Bitcoin “the first true religion of the 21st century.” Bitcoin promoter Hass McCook has taken to calling himself “The Friar” and wrote a series of Medium pieces comparing Bitcoin to a religion. Tesla’s ‘rolling stop’ feature mimicked dumb humans — and got 54K EVs recalled

Tesla is recalling nearly 54,000 vehicles in the US, as a recent Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta update allows its cars to perform a “rolling stop.” This means the vehicle doesn’t come to a complete halt before the sign, instead moving slowly through it. Unsurprisingly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a safety recall of the feature, which it deemed dangerous: Failing to stop at a stop sign... Read more

You’re all wrong: NFT is actually pronounced ‘nay-fey-tay’

Let’s get this straight right now: NFT is pronounced “nay-fey-tay.” That’s all there is to it. You might have read Corin Faife at the Verge claiming it should be said as “neft” — but they’re wrong. It’s nay-fey-tay. Forever and ever, nay-fey-tay. I can see where Faife is coming from, I really can. “Neft” is an elegant solution to saying those three letters. As it doesn’t appear NFTs are going... Read more
