The UK calls for an EV charging regulator — and the world should listen

The UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has called for the government to create an independent regulator to oversee the country’s public EV chargers.  Specifically, the SSMT has suggested the creation of a dedicated Office of Charging, called “Ofcharge,” to ensure that public charging infrastructure will efficiently support the transition to electric vehicles.  And you know what? It’s an amazing idea — and something the whole world should... Read more ›

For more than a decade we’ve been deeply immersed in a love affair with social media. And the thought of ending things can be painful. Late last year, Meta (previously Facebook) came under intense scrutiny after leaked... Read more ›

Your brain might be a quantum computer that hallucinates math

Quick: what’s 4 + 5? Nine right? Slightly less quick: what’s five plus four? Still nine, right? Okay, let’s wait a few seconds. Bear with me. Feel free to have a quick stretch. Now, without looking, what was the answer to the first question? It’s still nine, isn’t it? You’ve just performed a series of advanced brain functions. You did math based on prompts designed to appeal to entirely different... Read more ›

Review: Sony’s LinkBuds are the perfect earbuds for ambient awareness

I’m gonna say something a little controversial: I don’t really care if my headphones have noise canceling. Sure, I might appreciate the isolation on a long plane ride, but for 95% of what I use headphones for, noise canceling isn’t a priority — or it’s straight-up undesirable. Whether walking down a busy street, doing the dishes, or riding my bike through a quiet trail, I prefer music and audiobooks add... Read more ›

Uber claiming it’ll accept Bitcoin is nothing but a marketing ploy

One day, you may be able to pay for your Uber with Bitcoin. Or, at least, that’s what Dara Khosrowshahi, the company’s CEO, told Bloomberg.   This sounds good, but if you ask me? It’s nothing but a marketing stunt.  Before you call me biased, let’s take a closer look at what Khosrowshahi said:  Is Uber going to accept crypto in the future? Absolutely, at some point. This isn’t the right... Read more ›

How the Dutch use big data and real-time analytics to keep their country afloat

With over 27% of the country below sea level, the Netherlands boasts one of the world’s – if not the world’s — most intricate and advanced water management networks. Over 5,000 kilometers of waterways crisscross the country, connected by a sophisticated network of bridges, dykes, and locks. There are even more waterways than highways in the country, which are used to transport around 35% of the countries’ goods. Rijkswaterstaat, the... Read more ›

You really shouldn’t scan random QR codes

By now, I’m sure you’ll have heard of one of the Super Bowl’s big stories: the Coinbase QR advert. For the uninitiated, Coinbase — a cryptocurrency exchange — ran a 60 second spot that featured a QR code bouncing around in a way reminiscent of old DVD screensavers. It was a roaring success. Coinbase claims it witnessed over 20 million hits in a single minute on its special offer of... Read more ›

So… how many damn cryptocurrencies are there?

My daily routine currently looks like this: wake up, brush my teeth, eat breakfast, read about a new metaverse or NFT project, get confused, question life choices, sleep, repeat. With all the chatter around hyped web3 projects everywhere you look — from metaverses to NFT marketplaces — it got me thinking: how many cryptocurrencies exist right now? You might already know that besides the OGs Bitcoin and Ether, several more... Read more ›

Motorola’s XR neckband looks stupid, but it’s actually pretty smart

VR headsets can be bulky beings with some of them going up to 900 grams in weight — that’s more than some motorcycle helmets. Earlier this month, a German man even broke his neck playing a VR game, and while a heavy headset wasn’t directly blamed, that sort of weight on one’s noggin likely was at fault in his injury. Motorola has a new solution to take some weight off... Read more ›

DeepMind: Reward may NOT be enough for AGI — but it’s worth a try

DeepMind has been connected to artificial general intelligence since birth. The lab was launched with a mission to develop AGI, was cofounded by a researcher who coined the term, and has made some compelling advances in the field. It also recently produced a provocative paper on the subject: “Reward is Enough” The study hypothesizes that AGI could be achieved through a single approach: reinforcement learning. This technique provides feedback in... Read more ›

All EVs have automatic transmission… but Toyota begs to differ

This is something you might not know: almost all EVs are automatic.  You’ll be hard pressed to find one with a gear stick. Why, you ask? Because EVs simply don’t need more than a single gear.  I know, a stick shift car feels empowering, so why haven’t automakers thought about a “best-of-both-words” solution and put one in an EV? Oh wait, they have. Kinda. Toyota’s idea Yep, the carmaker is... Read more ›

Here’s why they don’t make stick shift EVs

When I first sat behind the wheel of an EV, I noticed something missing: the clutch and the gear stick.  The reason behind this is simple. EVs don’t have a gearbox. They’re automatic. So instead of a stick, you’ll find a lever, switch, or button that allows you to select “drive”, “park,” and “reverse.” Take a look at Polestar 2’s “gear” shifter. This rare asteroid sample is unveiling some of the Solar Systems biggest secrets

Just over 12 months ago, we were sitting at Woomera, in the Australian outback, waiting for a streak of light in the sky to testify that the Hayabusa2 spacecraft had returned from its voyage to collect a little piece of a near-Earth asteroid called Ryugu. Unfortunately for us, it was cloudy in Woomera that day and we didn’t see the spacecraft come in. But that was the only imperfection we... Read more ›

Did you catch all those Super Bowl EV ads? Well, WE RATED THEM

This Sunday saw Super Bowl LVI, an event where the half-time entertainment and TV commercials are as much a part of the occasion as the game itself.  And in the year of our lord 2022? EV makers went all in, spending a sizable chunk of their marketing budgets on advertising. So, how do they stack up? And who were the winners and losers? Let’s take a look: BMW   BMW’s effort... Ranking the names of Apple’s operating systems from worst to best

It’s not often Apple launches an entirely new operating system, but this year (or potentially the next) the company will do just that. Why? Because that’s when its long-awaited mixed reality headset is slated to be released. Until recently, the name of this operating system (or OS) was but a rumor. No longer! As reported by 9to5Mac, several developers found reference to something called “realityOS” in App Store logs. Comrades,... Read more ›
