Reinforcement learning: How rewards create intelligent machines

In June 2021, scientists at the AI lab DeepMind made a controversial claim. The researchers suggested that we could reach artificial general intelligence (AGI) using one single approach: reinforcement learning. They titled their paper on the subject: “Reward is Enough.” The team argued that AGI could emerge through an incentive mechanism known as a reward function. “We hypothesize that intelligence, and its associated abilities, can be understood as subserving the... A rocket crashing into the moon is a good thing for physics

On March 4, 2022, a lonely, spent rocket booster will smack into the surface of the Moon at nearly 6,000 mph. Once the dust has settled, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will move into position to get an up-close view of the smoldering crater and hopefully shed some light on the mysterious physics of planetary impacts. As a planetary scientist who studies the Moon, I view this unplanned impact as an... Read more

Anonymous called on its global hacker army to attack Russia — do they stand a chance?

A spate of cyber attacks has affected Ukraine’s digital systems since Russia’s invasion began. It soon became clear Russia’s “boots on the ground” approach would be supplemented by a parallel cyber offensive. Last week Ukraine called on its citizens to take to their keyboards and defend the country against Russia’s cyber threat. At the same time, a campaign was underway among the hacktivist collective Anonymous, calling on its global army... Read more

The best macOS apps for your brand new MacBook in 2022

Of all the great feelings in the world, one towers above all. That’s right, I’m talking about getting a new Apple computer. Besides it obviously being a shiny new thing, what really engrosses me is the idea of starting with a clean slate. At this stage, your old machine is probably filled with stuff you don’t use and, in the time you bought it, who knows what new macOS apps... Read more

How Google Inbox died… and this company resurrected it

Google Inbox was one of those products that a corner of the internet loved furiously — including me. So, when the company announced it was being discontinued in 2019, I was mad as hell. Now, a company named Shortwave, formed by ex-Google employees, is trying to bring it back. Before we talk about what they’re trying to do, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Why was Inbox killed? Inbox... Read more

Asus’ Zenfone 8z is a ray of hope for fans of compact phones

We might not see an iPhone mini this year — and that’s a big blow to fans of compact form factors in phones. Luckily though, we don’t have to give up all hope for ‘mini’ models as Asus has FINALLY launched the Zenfone 8z (Zenfone 8 in global markets) in India. It launched in global markets around May last year. I can say given the country was going through a... Read more

Netflix probably isn’t streaming 4K on your PC — here’s how to fix that

If you’re reading this post, you’re probably a person who appreciates image quality. You buy the best screen you can afford. You keep your display settings reasonably calibrated. You optimize your viewing distance for maximum detail perception. Naturally, you also pay for Netflix‘s top-tier 4K plan. Life’s too short for 1080p. One night, it’s too late to turn on your 100-inch TV, so you start up Netflix on your PC,... Read more

NASA’s new idea for gender equity: a body scanner that creates custom spacesuits

In March 2019, NASA had to postpone the first all-female spacewalk due to an unexpected snag: a shortage of medium-sized spacesuits. The milestone was pushed back after astronaut Anne McClain realized she needed a smaller configuration than originally planned. While the spacesuit had swappable parts, replacing the necessary piece could have taken up to 12 hours. On McClain’s recommendation, NASA switched the spacewalkers to avoid delaying the mission. The move... Read more

This tech can make road deaths a thing of the past

In the first six months of 2021, more than 20,000 people died in car accidents in the US alone, the majority of which was attributed to dangerous, distracted, or drunk driving.  But what if advanced technology could eliminate human weaknesses? Could we then make zero deaths possible?  The latest research by Neural Propulsion Systems (NPS) thinks so. It posits that new technology can actually enable vehicles to eliminate roadway deaths... These wild flying machines are set to shake up the VTOL world

It’s 2022 — which means we’ve been promised VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft for over a decade now. But while pioneer founders are incrementally moving towards commercial deployment, there’s a new breed of startups snapping at their heels.  Many are in their early stages, but all promise something unique, so I reached out to four of the most interesting companies to find out more.  Oh, and I gave them... Russia’s invasion of Ukraine threatens the International Space Station’s future

New U.S. sanctions on Russia will encompass Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, according to a speech U.S. President Joe Biden gave on Feb. 24, 2022. In response to these sanctions, the head of Roscosmos on the same day posted a tweet saying, among other things, “If you block cooperation with us, who will save the ISS from an uncontrolled deorbit and fall into the United States or Europe?” The International Space... The best thing the tech industry can do for Ukraine is donate

Are you a skilled tech worker? And want to help Ukraine in its war against Russia? Then the best thing you can do is donate. While many in the tech industry have the skills and talent to provide support in situations like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, they simply don’t have the necessary experience in these specific environments. I won’t share any examples of this, as singling specific attempts is mean-spirited.... Read more

The best ebikes you can buy in 2022

Ebikes are awesome. They take the edge out of long cycling trips, especially if you live in a hilly city, they’re exponentially better than cars for the environment, and they’re just fun to ride. Contrary to popular belief, they’re even comparable to regular bikes for exercise. But with an ever-increasing number of options in the market, it can be hard to sift through what’s actually good and what’s junk. Fret... Read more

Repairable batteries are critical to the EV and Ebike circular economy

Battery-powered vehicles are the future. Whether it’s EVs, ebikes, or escooters, going rechargeable is the way forward. However, not everything is rosy with this model. For all their green cred, most ebike batteries only last three to seven years, and cannot be easily recycled or their precious materials recovered.   Currently, the glue or welding used in designing battery packs makes it challenging to refurbish or replace cells or components within... Russia’s ramping up its censorship — and Big Tech’s barely doing a damn thing

Last week, Russia invaded Ukraine on President Vladimir Putin’s orders. The internet is playing a crucial part in keeping people around the world informed about the war and its impact on human lives. For the first few days, DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks on Ukrainian websites dominated the news. More recent coverage has centered around Russia’s censorship, and Big Tech’s response to the war. All that has affected what... Read more

AirTags are as dangerous as the society that surrounds them

Apple has released another category-defining product — but not in the way it would’ve wanted. AirTags, the company’s cheap and cheerful tracking devices, have become the category’s foremost technology, yet their misuse has embroiled the company in scandal. A gamut of reports have linked AirTags to stalking and theft, with one of the most prominent being the story of model Brooke Snader, who had one of the devices slipped into... Read more

These are the sustainable materials that could be used to build your future EV

No longer the preserve of technocrats, electric vehicles have taken the spotlight as the eco-friendly automobiles of choice. With growing concern for the planet, unpredictable fuel shortages, and changing commuting habits, more people are turning towards EVs instead of traditional gas guzzlers. It’s well known that EVs can lower emissions, especially when they’re charged with green energy. Much of their popularity stems from the desire to make driving more environmentally... Read more

Why people are leaving your company and how to get them to stay

When you first heard about the great resignation, what did you picture? Was it an army of white-collar workers hurling their monitors out the window, tearing up contracts and trashing their swivel chairs? Because the reality is a little less cinematic. People are burned out, miserable, and racking up more hours than ever before. For many, resigning was their last resort. The great resignation concept gets some things right, and... Read more
