German chancellor says push for renewables will revive economy

Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz says he believes forthcoming green tech investments will benefit the country’s stagnated economy as a whole. In a ‘summer interview’ with public broadcaster ZDF, the chancellor stated that the government has “moved at an incredible pace” when it comes to shifting legislation around hydrogen production and other renewable energy sources.  Indeed, in June this year, Germany overtook China as the second most attractive country for investing... Einstein, Newton could have been wrong about gravity, Gaia telescope data reveals

A groundbreaking study, based on observations from the European Space Agency’s billion-pixel Gaia space telescope, has revealed a “gravitational anomaly” that challenges our fundamental understanding of the universe. The anomaly occurs when loosely orbiting stars, known as wide binaries, seem to move in ways that defy standard models of gravity established by Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton.   Astronomer Kyu-Hyun Chae from Sejong University in South Korea made the discovery while... UK’s promise to protect encrypted messaging is ‘delusional,’ say critics

The British government’s promise to protect encryption has been pilloried by security experts and libertarians. The dispute stems from a section of the Online Safety Bill. Under the legislation, messaging apps would be forced to provide access to private communications when requested by the regulator Ofcom. Proponents say the measures will combat child abuse, but critics are aghast about the threat to privacy. They fear the plans will facilitate mass... Read more

EU to hold back on China tech investment ban — for now

The day following US President Biden’s unveiling of an executive order designed to curb investments in certain tech sectors in China has been marked by tentative reactions from both policymakers and the business community.  The UK government stated early on Wednesday that the decision provided “clarity” on the approach of its close ally. Furthermore, it said it would “consider these new measures closely” as it continued to evaluate any potential... Read more

Influencers have made social media a booming market for counterfeit goods, study finds

Social media influencers are facilitating the trade in counterfeit goods, according to new research by Portsmouth University. After analysing surveys of 2,000 people in the UK, the study team found around 22% of consumers who are active on social media have bought counterfeits endorsed by influencers. The researchers believe it’s the first-ever estimate of its kind. They warn that counterfeiters are exploiting the popularity of influencers to peddle harmful products.... Read more

UK may emulate US ban on China tech investments

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden unveiled an executive order banning new investments in certain tech sectors in China, citing security risks. The order is set to come into effect next year, and the US will be waiting to see if its closest ally will follow suit. However, for now, the UK says it will consider the measures taken by its transatlantic partner, as it continues to evaluate security implications.... Read more

Europe’s SpaceX competitor pushes rocket launch back to 2024

The European Space Agency’s next-generation heavy-lift rocket, Ariane 6, definitely won’t launch until at least 2024, the agency’s director general confirmed this week.  Ariane 6 was first scheduled to launch four years ago. However, the rocket has suffered a series of delays, attributed to technical issues, COVID-19, and design changes.  The ESA said the most recent setback was because it failed to complete a short hot firing test,, mimicking the... German rocket startup bags €30M as it eyes takeoff this year

While the US and China have dominated the space sector for decades, Europe is carving out a niche for itself: small satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO).  One of the most promising startups in this space is Germany’s Rocket Factory Augsburg, which has just raised €30m from KKR, an American investment firm.   The cash injection will facilitate RFA’s upcoming launch test at the end of this year and help complete its... TSMC to enter ‘Silicon Saxony’ with €10B chip plant

In a pivot toward Europe, Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC decided yesterday to invest in a €10bn chip factory in Germany.  With Taiwan under mounting pressure from Beijing to submit to mainland China authority, politicians — and customers — are increasingly concerned about disruptions to semiconductor supply chains. As such, the Taiwanese producer is looking to geographically diversify its dominant computer chip industry.  Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, or TSMC, produces most of... Read more

Deep learning model can steal data by listening to keystrokes with 95% accuracy

A team of UK researchers has trained a deep learning model to interpret keystrokes remotely based solely on audio. By recording keystrokes to train the model, they were able to predict what was typed on the keyboard with up to 95% accuracy. This accuracy dropped to 93% when using Zoom to train the system. According to the new research, this means that sensitive information like passwords and messages could be... Read more

Why Europe’s grocery delivery space is in a state of flux

As July drew to a close, Getir announced plans to withdraw from three more markets. The Turkish rapid grocery delivery startup pulled out of Spain, Portugal, and Italy, in a move that reduced its European footprint to just four countries. It’s the latest chapter in a string of difficult encounters for the company and for the q-commerce or rapid grocery delivery market more generally in Europe. The space is undergoing... Read more

Taiwan taps European satellite firms to protect wartime communications

As fears of war with China escalate, Taiwan is seeking European support for its communications systems. The island nation recently tapped services from two satellite firms on the continent: the UK’s OneWeb and Luxembourg’s SES. To avoid disruption during a potential conflict, SES will implement a medium-earth orbit (MEO) satellite network, Taipei’s digital ministry announced last week. SES confirmed the project to TNW on Monday. The company said it aimed... Read more

Germany’s Marvel Fusion to build $150M laser facility in US

Scientists are edging closer to a fusion energy system that doesn’t rely on magnetic field-based tokamak reactors or twisty stellarators. German startup Marvel Fusion has teamed up with Colorado State University to build the world’s first facility dedicated to commercialising inertial confinement — a type of fusion reaction produced by slamming atoms together many times per second using high-intensity lasers. Interest in this type of fusion has increased since scientists... Read more

Aerospace tech company to issue contrail reduction ‘credits’

UK-based aerospace software startup ZEROAVIA announced today that sustainability certification body Gold Standard has approved its methodology concept to issue what could be referred to as “contrail credits.”  Rather than offsetting carbon emissions directly (like carbon credits), they will offer an avenue for airlines to “make up” for the warming effects equivalent to that of carbon dioxide, by mitigating the non-CO2 climate impact of air travel.  Everyone knows that aeroplanes...
