European tech startups will see a 38% investment drop in 2023 compared to 2022 levels, the latest report by Atomico finds. The US and China are also looking at a 49% investment decrease in 2023 compared to 2021. According to... Read more

The EU is pushing big tech to apply a new method for tackling AI disinformation: labels. The bloc wants online platforms to mark any AI-generated photos, videos, and text, a top official announced on Monday. “The labelling should be done now — immediately,” said European Commission Vice President Vera Jourová, per DW. The request was made amid explosive growth in synthetic media. ChatGPT has been named the fastest-growing consumer application... Read more

Finally, a useful blockchain application: Tracing halal meat

Blockchain is frequently derided as a solution in search of a problem. But buried beneath the crypto scams and Web3 utopianism hide some intriguing use cases. Some of the most powerful applications are in traceability. When embedded in supply chains, blockchain can track the entire product lifecycle, from origin to consumption. As the tech provides permanent, indelible, and unalterable records, extensive data about items and transactions can be securely stored... Read more

Dutch students use iron balls for safe hydrogen storage and transport

Green hydrogen will almost certainly play a key role in the energy transition, but it does come with a number of inherent challenges. It’s highly flammable and must be stored at high pressures or cryogenic temperatures, which makes hydrogen storage and transport complex and expensive. A student team at Eindhoven University of Technology, called SOLID, is trying to solve this problem by using small iron balls (iron pellets) as hydrogen... Read more

Psychedelics startups counter stereotypes to bring hallucinogens into mental healthcare

LSD, magic mushrooms, MDMA, ketamine, DMT… it’s a suspicious product line for a legitimate business — and psychedelics startups know it. With that in mind, it’s unsurprising that the sector are wary of the stereotypes around hallucinogens. “What the industry really needs is the most boring person in the room to be presenting the topic,” says Clara Burtenshaw, co-founder of Neo Kuma Ventures, Europe’s largest VC fund for psychedelic healthcare.... Apple’s rumoured mixed reality headset may be the miracle the European XR industry needs

Apple is a sector definer. While the company rarely creates entirely new products, its hardware ends up being the baseline other devices are measured by. You only need to look at how the iPod, iPhone, and iPad defined what people expect from MP3 players, phones, and tablets. Now, Apple is hoping it can repeat this trick with an entirely new product: its rumoured VR/AR headset, expected to be announced on... Read more

AI trained on ape DNA predicts genetic disease risks for humans

A group of international researchers has shed further light on genetic variants responsible for human diseases by analysing primate DNA data with a novel AI algorithm. Initially, the scientists sequenced over 800 individual samples from 233 species of non-human primates representing all 16 families, from lemurs to gorillas. To interpret the data, they developed a new algorithm: PrimateAI-3D. PrimateAI-3D is built on deep-learning language architectures similar to those used in... Read more

You can now book seats on all-electric flights in Scandinavia — but read the small print

A European airline today opened reservations for its first-ever commercial electric flights — but don’t expect a booking for this year’s summer holiday. Or the next four after that. Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) aims to make the maiden voyages within Sweden, Norway, and Denmark in 2028 — and even that sounds ambitious. The company still hasn’t chosen the aircraft for the trip, which is unsurprising as the planes are still being... Read more

The 38-year-old threatened to withdraw OpenAI’s services over plans for the landmark legislation, which would force his company to comply with extra obligations.  Following a fierce backlash... How to deal with an egotistical CEO

Here’s the thing, it doesn’t take long for an outsized ego to manifest itself in the workplace. Everything is self-referential. Any topic leads back to wonderful them. One of my clients was offered a job recently that would pay roughly twice what she’s earning now. She nailed the interview, so I figured all she had to do was read and sign the contract. I was surprised when she said she... Read more

What happens when you set your techies free to build the perfect workspace?

No matter who your favourite character was, The Office (both the UK or US versions, let’s not get into a fight here) became an iconic series because it played on one thing we all know to be true: offices are boring. The tech industry tried to change all that by infusing some ‘fun’ into the office. Their plan was to attract adults to the workplace with bright colours, slides, rock... Read more

Twitter’s withdrawal from disinformation code draws ire of EU politicians

Following a decision to pull Twitter out of the EU’s (voluntary) disinformation Code of Practice last week, the reactions have not been long in coming. Upon receiving the news, the bloc’s industry chief Thierry Breton said that Twitter would still need to abide by EU rules soon enough. Or, as Monsieur Breton put it (tweeted, in fact) when referring to the Digital Services Act (DSA), which will make fighting disinformation... Read more
