Danish biotech Cellugy wants to replace microplastics in cosmetics

Danish biotech Cellugy has raised €8.1mn in EU funding to accelerate production of a biodegradable material designed to replace microplastics in cosmetics. The grant, awarded under the EU’s LIFE Programme for environmental projects, will support the commercialisation of EcoFLEXY, a cellulose-based material for use in personal care products such as creams, gels, and toothpaste.  Cellugy claims EcoFLEXY is the first material of its kind to match the performance of fossil-based... These sensors ‘listen with light’ to guard Europe from subsea sabotage

Dutch tech scaleup Optics11 has launched an underwater monitoring system that uses light waves to “listen” for the presence of foreign objects. Called OptiBarrier, the system can detect enemy submarines, drones, and surface vessels from up to 150km away — without revealing its own position. “We listen with light,” the company’s CEO, Paul Heiden, told TNW. “That means our technology is entirely undetectable and can’t be jammed.”  The standard method... European night train startup promises green, luxury travel at airline prices

Berlin-based startup Nox Mobility emerged this month with ambitious plans for a night train service connecting more than a dozen European cities. The network will feature sleek, private cabins — all for the price of a short-haul plane ticket. While there are some night trains operating in Europe, cabins are typically very small and private booths are hard to find. Some, like the European Sleeper, which runs from Brussels to... Read more

‘Space umbrella’ returns first striking images of Earth’s forests

A giant umbrella-like satellite fitted with European tech has revealed its first images of Earth’s surface. The probe, called “Biomass,” was built by a host of aerospace giants and startups for the European Space Agency (ESA). It launched in April on a Vega-C rocket from Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. European Astrotech, a UK-based startup, was responsible for fuelling the satellite ahead of takeoff. Biomass’ mission is to capture... Read more

Dutch tech leaders: Europe won’t lead in AI hardware, but can in AI apps

The race to dominate AI infrastructure has left Europe trailing the US — but the continent still has a shot at global leadership in AI apps. That was the verdict of Dutch tech leaders at the Assembly, the invite-only policy track of TNW Conference in Amsterdam. While Silicon Valley controls the scaffolding for AI, they urged Europe to focus on building apps on top. Leading the call was Jeroen van... Read more

Europe must bet bigger on young founders, tech leaders urge at TNW Conference

Europe must take bigger bets on young founders to build tomorrow’s tech giants, industry leaders urged today. Speaking at TNW Conference, investors and CEOs called for stronger support for entrepreneurial ambition — before Europe’s best ideas and brightest minds head elsewhere. Kieran Hill, General Partner at 20VC — a venture capital firm founded by podcast host Harry Stebbings — urged the continent’s institutions to expand their appetite for risk. “We... Read more

Europe approves first saliva-based contraceptive — no pill required

A saliva-based fertility tracker has received regulatory approval for use as a contraceptive in Europe. Developed by Berlin-based startup Inne, the at-home testing device — called the “Minilab” — tracks daily changes in progesterone levels, a hormone that plays a key role in regulating the menstrual cycle. It’s billed as a non-invasive alternative to hormonal birth control methods like the pill — and early tests have shown promising results. A... Read more

AI as ‘socially vital’ as water and energy, say UK execs

Without water, the average human would die after about five days. Without energy, our society as we know it would collapse. But what about a world without AI? According to British business leaders, the consequences would be equally catastrophic. A new report by London-based software firm Endava, surveying 500 entrepreneurs, found that two-thirds of respondents rank AI as socially vital — on par with water and electricity. A whopping 93%... War tech goes old school with Sweden’s first TNT factory since Cold War

A Swedish startup is taking defence tech back to basics — by building the country’s first TNT factory since the Cold War. Stockholm-based Swebal has secured a €3mn investment for the plant, slated to enter full operation in late 2027. Located in Nora, a town about three hours from the capital, the factory is expected to produce more than 4,000 tonnes of TNT a year. Investors in the facility include... Read more

Two satellites equipped with European tech have delicately pulled off an artificial solar eclipse — giving scientists unmatched views of the Sun’s scorching corona. The European Space Agency (ESA) developed the probes alongside more than 40 space tech firms. Among them are a trio of startups, which contributed several key technologies for the mission: sensors for solar tracking, light detectors to fine-tune positioning, and software that orchestrated the satellites’ intricate... Opinion: Space startups are pivoting to defence. That’s great for innovation

A few months ago, at the SmallSat Symposium, a panel issued a sobering warning to space startups: do not chase defence dollars at the expense of long-term sustainability. Why? Because companies, particularly in the space sector, might be tempted to follow the money rather than focus on producing valuable products and services with broader, longer-term applications. It’s of course true that any company should be wary of “leaning in” too... Read more

Quantum art, multiball, and AI selfies: TNW 2025’s best side quests

Qubits, entanglement, superposition, trapped ions, Schrödinger’s cat. These terms sound strange because the world of quantum mechanics — where things can exist in multiple states at once — is strange.  Thankfully, a group of students from TU Delft are bringing these powerful sub-atomic phenomena to life at TNW Conference through an exhibition of abstract artworks. Their project, Emergence Delft, blends science and creativity into a mind-bending exploration of quantum reality.... Read more

World’s biggest sand battery to heat Finnish town without fossil fuels

A small town in Finland is about to ditch fossil fuels in its heating network thanks to a sand-filled energy storage tank the size of a house. Finnish startup Polar Night Energy recently turned on the so-called sand battery in the municipality of Pornainen, an hour north of Helsinki.  The machine, which uses dirt to store excess renewable energy as heat, will warm the homes and businesses in the town...
