Stellantis opens €40M EV battery tech centre in Italy

Last week, Stellantis announced it had inaugurated its first, €40mn, battery tech centre in Turin, Italy. This will allow for in-house testing and development of EV battery packs for the company’s upcoming products. EU has ‘no chance’ of semiconductor independence — but neither does anyone else

Our world runs on semiconductors. The slivers of silicon provide electronic brains to phones, computers, cars, data centres, and stock markets. They’re also the digital backbone of modern militaries.  Some of the first chips ever made were used in missile guidance systems. Today, they power countless military devices, from fighter jets and howitzers to radios and radar. In the Russian-Ukraine war, chips power HIMARS rocket launchers, Javelin anti-tank missiles, and... UK rejoins EU’s Horizon flagship research programme

After months of negotiations, the UK is rejoining Horizon, the EU’s €95.5bn flagship research and innovation programme, prime minister Rishi Sunak announced Thursday. Although the country’s participation in the programme was part of the Brexit deal, its membership had been blocked for three years following Brussels’ and London’s feud over the trade rules for Northern Ireland — the UK’s only land border with an EU member state, the Republic of... How to support the mental health and wellbeing of remote workers

When COVID-19 hit, suddenly commutes were a thing of the past, and many home offices took the shape of kitchen tables or even stacks of cushions on the bed. While Zoom fashion may have been the height of comfy for some, for many the isolation and lack of separation between work and home was torture, and exacerbated an already escalating crisis of loneliness and mental health.  Enabled by the digital... EU’s new digital market rules target Meta, Google, 4 more tech giants

The European Commission has named today six tech giants whose market power it aims to control through its Digital Markets Act (DMA) — a landmark pro-competition regulation, designed to ensure a fair and open digital market for both companies and consumers. The six companies are designated as “gatekeepers” of the EU’s digital market. This means that their core platform services: are active in at least three member states; gather over... Read more â€ș

Ukraine’s fight against disinformation is creating a new startup sector

When Russian troops flooded into Ukraine last year, an army of propagandists followed them. Within hours, Kremlin-backed media were reporting that President Zelenskyy had fled the country. Weeks later, a fake video of Zelenskyy purportedly surrendering went viral. But almost as soon as they emerged, the lies were disproven. Government campaigns had prepared Ukrainians for digital disinformation. When the crude deepfake appeared, the clip was quickly debunked, removed from social... Read more â€ș

How criminal networks in Sweden use false Spotify streams to launder money

This morning, one of Sweden’s largest newspapers, Svenska Dagbladet (SvD), published a thorough investigation into how criminal networks have used Spotify to launder money for years. Specifically, they have been paying for false streams of music published by artists with ties to the groups, and then capitalised on the engineered popularity.  Analysts at the National Operative Unit of the Swedish Police Force have been looking at (or listening to) rappers... Apple and Microsoft deny EU ‘gatekeeper’ status for iMessage and Bing

Apple and Microsoft are pressing the EU to omit iMessage and Bing, respectively, from a list of “gatekeepers” subject to new regulatory requirements. Their reasoning? The services, claim the companies, simply aren’t popular enough. The dispute stems from the EU’s new Digital Markets Act, a landmark law designed to constrain the power of big tech. A key aim of the rules is to prevent digital giants from squashing smaller rivals... Read more â€ș

Dutch quantum spinout bags €1.5M for qubit testing tech

Q-day may still be somewhere far in the future. However, that is not hindering cautiously optimistic investors from putting their money into the oh-so-seductive promise of quantum technology. Latest in line to be on the receiving end of such confidence is Dutch startup Orange Quantum Systems. The company, which builds quantum chip test equipment, just raised €1.5mn in pre-seed funding to support the emerging industry’s transition from “lab to fab.”... Read more â€ș

Dog-like robot maps out radioactive area at the UK’s Dounreay nuclear plant

As part of the UK’s decommissioning efforts of the Dounreay nuclear site in Scotland, a dog-like robot has mapped out a radioactive section that’s been sealed off for 25 years. Developed by Boston Dynamics, the quadruple robotic device, called “Spot,” is described as a “mobile agile robot.” Thanks to its ability to move over rough terrain, avoid obstacles, and climb stairs, it can monitor and collect data in hazardous areas.... How offshore wind-to-hydrogen could help fill Europe’s clean energy demand

Hydrogen is being hailed as, if not a silver bullet, then at least a crucial component to decarbonising the world’s energy sources. And no wonder — when burned, hydrogen produces zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, the transition to a renewable hydrogen economy must first overcome a non-insignificant list of challenges.  So-called green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy, currently accounts for only about 1% of global production.... Groningen’s formula for startup success: fostering university spin-offs

Although academic researchers have the knowledge and skills to develop potentially life changing products for patients, they often face unique challenges compared to other founders. Lengthy and expensive R&D costs often make VCs hesitant to invest. While spinoff founders are experts in their field, they often lack the necessary skills to build a successful startup, particularly in sales and business management. Finally, regulations and certifications often make it difficult to... Read more â€ș
