Sweden’s Scania unveils world’s first semi-truck covered in solar panels

Late last week, Sweden’s Scania revealed a world-first hybrid semi-truck covered in solar panels. Because of its self-produced energy, the unique prototype has the potential to reduce both operational costs and CO2 emissions of heavy transport.  The hybrid truck’s trailer is covered in 100 square metres of solar panels that are plugged into an electrical system carried on board. It is being deployed in a research project to examine how... Read more â€ș

Dog-like robot maps out radioactive area at the UK’s Dounreay nuclear plant

As part of the UK’s decommissioning efforts of the Dounreay nuclear site in Scotland, a dog-like robot has mapped out a radioactive section that’s been sealed off for 25 years. Developed by Boston Dynamics, the quadruple robotic device, called “Spot,” is described as a “mobile agile robot.” Thanks to its ability to move over rough terrain, avoid obstacles, and climb stairs, it can monitor and collect data in hazardous areas.... How offshore wind-to-hydrogen could help fill Europe’s clean energy demand

Hydrogen is being hailed as, if not a silver bullet, then at least a crucial component to decarbonising the world’s energy sources. And no wonder — when burned, hydrogen produces zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, the transition to a renewable hydrogen economy must first overcome a non-insignificant list of challenges.  So-called green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy, currently accounts for only about 1% of global production.... Groningen’s formula for startup success: fostering university spin-offs

Although academic researchers have the knowledge and skills to develop potentially life changing products for patients, they often face unique challenges compared to other founders. Lengthy and expensive R&D costs often make VCs hesitant to invest. While spinoff founders are experts in their field, they often lack the necessary skills to build a successful startup, particularly in sales and business management. Finally, regulations and certifications often make it difficult to... Read more â€ș

The Fairphone 5 revives the dream of a smartphone that lasts for 10 years

Our phones have lamentably short lives. Batteries die before they’re old, compatibility is transient, software support expires, and minor upgrades soon arrive that are presented as must-haves. It’s an insidious model — and one that Fairphone is upending. The Dutch startup this week released a handset that sets new standards for sustainability: the Fairphone 5. Laudably, the company envisions the device functioning for 10 years. The modular machine is built... Read more â€ș

Paris bids au revoir to rental e-scooters as ban comes into effect

Today, Paris became one of the first European cities to implement an outright ban on rented e-scooters, after residents previously voted overwhelmingly in favour of the motion. During a referendum in April, voters were given two choices: “for” or “against” a city-wide ban on shared e-scooters. Almost 90% voted in favour of the ban, but the overall turnout was low — only 7.5% of eligible voters casted ballots. Nevertheless, the... Read more â€ș

Your Fitbit is ‘useless’ unless you consent to illegal data sharing, says advocacy group

Vienna-based advocacy group Noyb has filed complaints against Fitbit in Austria, the Netherlands, and Italy, alleging that the Google-owned fitness tracking company is in violation of EU data privacy regulations.    Fitbit — which sells watches that track activity, heart rate, and sleep — “forces” new users of its app to consent to data transfers outside the EU, said Noyb.  Currently, the only way Fitbit users can withdraw their consent is... LLMs prone to data poisoning and prompt injection risks, UK authority warns

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is warning organisations to be wary of the imminent cyber risks associated with the integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) — such as ChatGPT — into their business, products, or services. In a set of blog posts, the NCSC emphasised that the global tech community doesn’t yet fully grasp LLMs’ capabilities, weaknesses, and (most importantly) vulnerabilities. “You could say our understanding of LLMs... Google DeepMind unveils AI watermarking tool as political pressure mounts

As governments increase demands for labels on AI-generated content, Google DeepMind has released a potential solution: a watermarking tool. Named SynthID, the system harnesses deep learning to embed digital stamps into the pixels of images. According to DeepMind, the watermarks are imperceptible to the human eye, but detectable with an algorithm. The UK-based research lab said the watermark doesn’t compromise image quality. It also remains detectable after modifications, such as... Read more â€ș
