Climate tech is set to boom. This VC explains why it’s ripe for investment

Climate tech is receiving a proportionally larger share of what is, undeniably, a muted venture capital investment environment. VC and private equity investment in the sector has, thus far in 2023, fallen by 40% — just as the evidence of the need for more money for potentially planet-saving technology is becoming increasingly insurmountable.  However, the total amount for all venture and equity investment was down 50.2% year-over-year. So, while climate... Read more

Apple has faced a major setback in its longstanding €14.3bn tax dispute with the EU after an adviser to the bloc’s highest court said an earlier ruling over the tech giant’s business in Ireland should be thrown out and the case re-run.  Advocate General Giovanni Pitruzzella of the EU Court of Justice said in an advisory opinion that Apple’s win in a lower EU court should be shelved because of... 140-year-old ocean heat tech could supply islands with limitless energy

A UK-based startup is looking to breathe new life into a century-old technology that could power tropical island nations with virtually limitless, consistent, renewable energy.  Known as ocean thermal energy conversion or ‘OTEC,’ the technology was first invented in 1881 by French physicist Jacques Arsene d’Arsonval. He discovered that the temperature difference between sun-warmed surface water and the cold depths of the ocean could be harnessed to generate electricity.   OTEC... Read more

Your pets can now eat meat that’s ‘grown’ in a lab

Good news, cats and dogs: you can now legally eat lab-grown meat. The milestone comes courtesy of a world-first permit for cultivated pet food. Czech startup Bene Meat Technologies received the inaugural license from the EU on Wednesday. The company can now produce and sell the futuristic cuisine, which is made from cells taken from living animals.  After extraction, the cells are placed in a bioreactor and grown into muscle... A third of GDPR fines for social media platforms linked to child data protection

It’s been a little over five years since the GDPR came into effect and fines keep amassing — especially for social media platforms. New research by Dutch VPN company Surfshark has found that, since 2018, five of the most popular social media (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Whatsapp, and X/Twitter) have been fined over €2.9bn for violating the EU’s data protection law. Facebook alone accounts for nearly 60% of the total amount,... Read more

German satellite will use AI to detect anomalies on asteroids and planets

A German satellite that will test new AI technologies in orbit for automatic detection of anomalies on planets and asteroids is set for launch. Despite its ambitious mission, the so-called SONATE-2 is a six-unit cubesat, a type of nanosatellite that’s no bigger than a shoebox. It was designed and built by a team led by aerospace engineer Professor Hakan Kayal from Julius-Maximilians-Universität (JMU) Würzburg in Germany. According to Kayal, projects... Read more

Close doesn’t cut it: What we can learn from Iceland’s pay parity strike

For 14 years running, Iceland has topped the charts on gender balance. That’s not to say the Nordic nation has achieved full gender parity but that, by measure of the World Economic Forum, its gender gap is more than 90% closed. And it’s the only country in the Global Gender Gap Index to have achieved as much. The first Kvennafri or ‘Women’s Day Off’ was held in 1975. This year,... Read more

How Europe is racing to resolve its AI sovereignty woes

While not yet as illustrious as its North American counterparts OpenAI, Anthropic, or Cohere, Europe’s own cohort of generative AI startups is beginning to crystallise. Just yesterday, news broke that Germany’s Aleph Alpha had raised €460mn, in one of the largest funding rounds ever for a European AI company.  The European tech community received news of the investment with some enthusiasm. While much focus has been on how the EU... Read more

‘Dark universe’ space mission reveals its first colour images of the cosmos

A spacecraft that’s exploring the dark universe has released its first full-colour images of the cosmos. Named Euclid after the ancient Greek “father of geometry,” the satellite was developed by the European Space Agency (ESA). Its mission: produce the world’s largest, most accurate 3D map of the universe — with time as the third dimension.  Over a six-year journey that launched in July, the €1bn probe will monitor more than... Why Europe is lagging behind in the spacetech race

News broke last month that the European Space Agency (ESA) had engaged SpaceX to launch four of Europe’s Galileo satellites into orbit in 2024. The decision to turn to Elon Musk’s US-based company comes in the wake of delays to Europe’s own Ariane 6 rockets, which mean the continent is without its own means to deliver large payloads into space. Though it’s only designed to bridge the gap in our... Read more

Why the future of food is ‘invisible innovation’

When you hear “the future of food,” what comes to mind? Star Trek-like food synthesisers, pills to replace your lunch, lab-grown meat, and insects for protein? Yes, the future of food might contain those things. However, it will also be a lot less… strange.  That is according to Beatriz Jacoste Lozano, the director of the KM ZERO Food Innovation Hub. TNW caught up with her during last week’s Valencia Digital... Read more

AI is the ‘word of the year.’ Here’s how previous tech terms fared

The artificial intelligence hype train has reached another milestone. In an eagerly-anticipated announcement, Collins Dictionary today named AI as its word of the year. Generously, Collins also provided a definition for the nebulous term: “the modelling of human mental functions by computer programs.” Additionally, the dictionary offered an explanation for the award. According to the book’s British publisher, usage of “AI” has quadrupled over the previous 12 months. That shouldn’t... Read more
