DuckDuckGo’s new Email Protection service sounds helpful but limited

DuckDuckGo has unveiled a new email forwarding service that strips trackers from your messages. To get the Email Protection tool, you have to sign up for a free @duck.com address. The tool will then remove hidden trackers from emails sent to this address, before forwarding them to your regular inbox. You can currently access the beta version by joining the private waiting list. To sign-up, open the DuckDuckGo app for... Read more

PSA: Sticking your arm into the vacuum of space would really suck

If you’ve watched any sci-fi shows or read any books about space, then you probably know that human bodies and vacuums don’t mix well. You’ve probably heard that all sorts of bad things happen without atmospheric pressure constantly weighing down on your flesh, not the least of which is the fact that your body will rapidly expand to about twice its size, as your skin stretched like a balloon. Have... Read more

Galleries are using AI to measure the ‘quality’ of art… SET ME AFLAME

AI has set its destructive sights on one of life’s greatest pleasures: visiting galleries. An Italian museum has started using AI-powered cameras to measure the “attraction value” of works of art. The ShareArt devices collect visual data on spectators, such as how long they look at a painting and where on the canvas their attention is focused. “Thanks to simple data elaboration, an observer’s gaze can be translated into a... Researchers invented a new touchscreen material so we never run out

Have you ever imagined your smartphone or tablet without a touchscreen? This could soon be the case if we run out of indium, one of the rarest minerals on Earth. Indium is used in many high-tech devices such as touch screens, smartphones, solar panels, and smart windows, in the form of indium tin oxide. This compound is optically transparent and electrically conductive — the two crucial features required for touch... Read more

UK government implies current EV grant will be culled

In March, the UK government cut its electric vehicle grant for the fourth time in ten years. Specifically, it reduced the subsidy by $700 (£500) to $3,480 (£2,500), and capped price eligibility at $49,000 (£35,000) from $68,000 (£50,000). On Monday, during an interview with Autocar, Transport Decarbonization Minister Rachel Maclean defended the government’s decision and hinted that the “Plug-in Grant” might be disposed of altogether.  Supporting the cut She explained... ‘I don’t know’ is the best phrase for your career

I used to do sales, and I found three words very helpful: “I don’t know.” The internet is full of articles for salespeople offering alternatives to saying those three words, all with elaborate ways to avoid admitting ignorance. And I get it: telling someone you don’t know something is hard, especially when you’re trying to convince that person to give you money. But that’s why saying “I don’t know” is... Read more

New research tries to explain consciousness with… quantum physics

One of the most important open questions in science is how our consciousness is established. In the 1990s, long before winning the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for his prediction of black holes, physicist Roger Penrose teamed up with anaesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff to propose an ambitious answer. They claimed that the brain’s neuronal system forms an intricate network and that the consciousness this produces should obey the rules of quantum... Read more

Apple’s MagSafe battery pack IS NOT FUNNY

People, listen. I need you to stop. There’s no need to make fun of Apple’s MagSafe battery pack. You’re upsetting Tim Cook. And, by proxy, me. There is NOTHING FUNNY about the new product. Is it okay to be a little surprised about the MagSafe battery pack? Of course. Especially when Apple shows us an image of a product like this: So sleek, so fancy. And then, in reality, it... Oh great, now I’ve gotta check my phone for Pegasus spyware?

Barely a couple of days have passed since the revelation of the infamous Pegasus spyware being used to snoop on journalists and politicians in several countries. Now, there’s a tool from Amnesty International to check if your phone has been infected with it. Impressive and alarming all at once. TechCrunch’s Zack Whittaker has the dirt on this; you’ll need to use a command line interface for now, take a backup... Read more

Google killed the 2020 Pixel Buds, so here’s my ‘Pro’ version wish list

Google‘s 2020 Pixel Buds, despite some notable flaws, are some of my favorite Bluetooth headphones — and I say that as an audiophile who’s persnickety about sound quality. They had a balance of sound quality, features, comfort, and smarts that few headphones can match to date. Unfortunately, Google appears to have just killed them. I can only hope that’s because there’s an even better follow-up on the way. As noted... Read more

The Microsoft Exchange hack, which was identified in January, affected over a quarter of a million servers worldwide. The Biden administration said it had a “high degree of confidence” that the attack was carried out by “malicious cyber actors” affiliated with the... Read more

Freaking out over that dancing robot? You clearly don’t get how murder works

Anytime “Skynet” is trending on social media, and there isn’t a movie about a gubernatorial time-traveling robot being announced, it can only mean one thing: the mainstream saw a robot sneeze or something and everyone’s running around in circles screaming that the sky is falling. Imagine what AI powered machines will be able to do in the next 5-10 years. Boston Dynamics machines flawlessly and soulfully dancing in rhythm. pic.twitter.com/1PHmurRo1k... Read more

Scientists want to ‘listen’ to the Big Bang so they can unravel its mysteries

Exactly what happened at the beginning of the universe, 14 billion years ago, is one of the greatest mysteries in physics – there’s no simple way to probe it. That’s because, in its early stages, the universe was filled with a dense plasma – a gas made out of charged particles including electrons and protons (particles that comprise the atomic nucleus alongside neutrons). Photons (particles of light) were trapped in... Read more
